Von Miller has played at the highest level in football, but there is one sport where the future Hall of Famer knows he falls short. As he settled into his first season with his hometown Dallas Cowboys, Miller admitted basketball was never part of his skill set.
Miller discussed his move to Dallas on the inaugural Season 2 episode of his Free Range with Von Miller podcast. The seven-time All-Pro signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys last month after spending most of his NFL career away from home.
"I'm good at so many different sports, but basketball is just not one of them," Miller said. "It just did not—God is very fair, and I always wanted to play basketball, and that's just one thing that I just never had in my bag. I play golf better than I play."
Miller may not have much confidence in his basketball game, but golf is a different story.

He called it his favorite way to spend a few hours, especially when he could get out with his friends.
"Yeah, I love golf, man. It's my favorite way to waste time," Miller said on September 2 on his podcast. "I always say that I'm not like a stick or anything like that, but it's my favorite way to waste five to six hours, especially out there with the boys."
For a two-time Super Bowl champion, Miller has plenty of experience across the sports world. Basketball, though, appears to be the one place where he would rather stay on the sidelines.
Miller's value to Dallas, however, goes well beyond what he can do on the field.
Von Miller embracing a veteran role with the Cowboys
Miller was a major Cowboys signing this offseason. He is no longer the player who led the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl after the 2015 season.
He also isn't the same player who helped the Los Angeles Rams win a Super Bowl after the 2021 season. Still, Miller had nine sacks for the Washington Commanders in 2025, a total that would have led the Cowboys.
Miller is just as excited about joining Dallas, calling it a dream to play for his hometown team. The 37-year-old also knows his playing career is nearing its end and wants to remain with the Cowboys in a front-office role.
“Whether it’s director of pro personnel, team president, assistant GM, GM," Miller said on September 4 via Patrik Walker's X. “I want to be in the front office, in any capacity. Will [McClay] has done an incredible job of fanning that flame and giving me a chance to live a triple dream here with the Dallas Cowboys."
Miller has already taken on a role beyond his pass-rushing duties. He said he's being paid to be a "locker room guy" and has embraced the chance to mentor younger players.
That was visible during Dallas' preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals, when cameras caught Miller on the sideline coaching up rookie pass rusher Malachi Lawrence.
Miller knows the value of having a veteran in his corner. During his fourth NFL season, the Broncos signed former Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware, who became an important mentor for him.
Ware still recorded 10 sacks in his first season with Denver, but his impact on Miller went beyond the stat sheet.
Now Miller has a chance to provide that same kind of guidance in Dallas while preparing for life after football.
