Brian Schottenheimer Earns Michael Irvin's Backing for 2026 Decisions

The Dallas Cowboys are ready to make a dominance in the upcoming season with teamwork and unity.

After performing in OTAs, the team carries on their tradition of ‘Legend Days’ on May 28 in Frisco, Texas, a part of team activities that began last year, where former Cowboys players, such as Michael Irvin, shared ‘guidance’ and ‘insight’ with the current roster. Irvin even praised head coach Brian Schottenheimer for the initiative.

“I absolutely love the fact that Coach Schottenheimer encourages this, just the cross-pollinization of eras so we can pass on thoughts or whatever, provide any kind of help,”  Irvin said on Thursday. “Answer any questions the young men need….Then we hear what it means to them and try to find that harmony and that family unity.”

Irvin joined the event with Drew Pearson, Daryl "Moose" Johnston, Bob Lilly, and Darren Woodson.

“I think all greatness starts with this,” Irvin added. “Becoming a family first. Because only football families win championships. Football teams and organizations, it’s too hard for them.”

Former fullback Daryl “Moose” Johnson said the idea of Schottenheimer was to give the players a better understanding of the habits and mindset that led to success in the past.

Pearson shared stories from his playing days, while Johnston reflected on the levels that helped the Cowboys' dynasty in the 1990s. Whereas Lilly discussed the reason for the team's success, Woodson focuses on the importance of mental toughness.

While the Cowboys' aim to build a stronger team culture, the front office has to fix some requirements.

Brian Schottenheimer Holds Cards Close as Cowboys OTAs Begin

Brian Schottenheimer enters the early phase of offseason work with roster questions while keeping the Dallas Cowboys’ plans under wraps as OTAs approach.

According to A to Z, the team prepares to begin organized team activities, and attention around the coaching staff has shifted toward how the team will structure its offensive line, especially with personnel decisions not resolved.

Since OTAs are non-contact in nature, the focus is less on competition and more on positioning, alignment experiments, and focusing on flexibility across roles.  Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of development within the Cowboys when discussing second-year tackle Tyler Guyton,

“Guyton’s got a chance to be an elite player, but he’s got to take that next step, and we have to help him get that next step," Schottenheimer said.

Guyton is expected to get an extended look at left tackle, internal decisions, including how Dallas handles flexibility with Tyler Smith’s positioning.

Smith has shown a preference for playing inside, but the coaching staff has not closed the door on potential experimentation at tackle. As OTAs begin, the Cowboys enter a phase where little changes in alignment could indicate long-term planning.

How do you think the Cowboys' strategy will help them make their impact in the 2026 season? Let us know!
