While much of the attention surrounding the Dallas Cowboys' wide receiver is focused on his future with the team, head coach Brian Schottenheimer highlighted a different side of the wideout.
During the June 16 mandatory minicamp media session, Schottenheimer made a surprising admission that Pickens' presence is more significant on the team and extends far beyond what he brings to the field.
“His smile is infectious, and when he's around, it's great for us,” Schottenheimer said, per the Dallas Cowboys YT channel. “I say it all the time - the influence that he has, I don't even think he has the understanding of how powerful it is. Because he loves playing the game so much, and he loves playing the game specifically here with his teammates."

Pickens enters the 2026 season after his breakout campaign in 2025, where he recorded all career highs in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), and touchdowns (9) and earned his first Pro Bowl nod.
After missing the voluntary sessions and OTA during the offseason, Pickens showed up for the mandatory minicamp on June 16. The Cowboys have been careful in not letting the wideout get to the field immediately, being smart with the training so as not to risk injuries.
“He'll do all the mock, he'll do all the individual, and we'll just keep him out of the team," Schottenheimer said during the presser. "Just let him watch. And he'll be coach Pickens today during the team period."
Schottenheimer believes that Pickens' showing up is more about how he cares for his brothers in the locker room and his commitment towards them.
"I know how he feels about this football team, this locker room and what we're building here," Schottenheimer added.
Rather than allowing contract discussions to become a distraction, Pickens' presence at minicamp signaled his commitment to the team and his goals for the 2026 season.
Cowboys Benefiting From George Pickens' Mature Mindset
Pickens attended the mandatory minicamp on June 16, putting an end to the speculation regarding a potential holdout for a contract extension with the Cowboys.
“What’s important to me is winning,” Pickens said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic. “Like I said from the beginning, I always want to bring a Super Bowl to a group of guys that never had that feeling. That’s really the most important part to me.”
Pickens signed the franchise tag ($27.3M) in April, making him play the 2026 season with the Cowboys.
The Cowboys executives have been firm on neither trading him nor extending a long-term deal, even though the franchise has time until July 15 to negotiate an extension.
With contract questions still lingering, Pickens appears focused on proving his value and helping the Cowboys land the Super Bowl win this season.
