The Dallas Cowboys are in full swing as they enter the third phase of the OTAs. With the focus being on the team's preparation for the upcoming season, wide receiver George Pickens' absence in Tuesday's OTA session became a talking point for many.

According to ESPN NFL Nation reporter Todd Archer, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer made it clear that the team is not pressuring Pickens to attend voluntary practice events.

“Brian Schottenheimer said the Cowboys will be smart with how they work George Pickens into minicamp next week,” Archer posted on June 9. “While the Cowboys are confident Pickens has been working out on his own, they don’t want to give him too much risk of injury.”

The Cowboys traded Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025 during the final year of his rookie contract. The WR has signed a one-year, $27.3 million franchise-exclusive deal with the Cowboys this offseason.

Pickens recorded 93 passes for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns last season, making it worthwhile to retain him for the 2026 season.

Furthermore, the move added another playmaker to the team's offense, led by quarterback Dak Prescott and All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb.

While Pickens' absence generated some discussion, the Cowboys do not appear concerned. Instead, the focus remains on making sure the receiver is fully ready when the mandatory minicamp begins.

Cowboys Expect Pickens Back for Minicamp

According to Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr., coach Brian Schottenheimer has expressed confidence that Pickens will be available when the team begins camp next week.

“George Pickens is expected to be at minicamp next week. Pickens had not told me he would be there. For me, hopes and expects are the same thing,” Schottenheimer said.

The Cowboys remain confident in Pickens' commitment despite his absence from voluntary workouts.

Pickens had a very successful run at Dallas last season, alongside CeeDee Lamb. Now, Cowboys fans are eager to see the duo in action once again.

Lamb also missed a recent OTA session for personal reasons. But neither of their absences is believed to be a long-term concern.

Dallas fielded one of the NFL's more productive offenses last season, averaging 27.7 points per game while ranking second in passing yards per game.

With Pickens expected to join the group during minicamp, the Cowboys will hope their passing attack can continue the same streak from last season.
