Brian Schottenheimer Throws Wrench In Cowboys' Draft Plans

After attending the Miami Pro Day on Monday, the Dallas Cowboys moved on to the Texas Pro Day the following day, where HC Brian Schottenheimer addressed the team’s plans for this year’s NFL Draft.

With so many question marks swirling around the defense, when asked about their approach by Tommy Yarish of the Dallas Cowboys network, he answered,

“You want to be prepared to do what we need to do on defense, but certainly, we’re not going to pass on a great offensive player if they’re there.”

It seems that the Cowboys have been keeping an eye on the offense amid strengthening their defense, with 2 NFL Draft first-round picks, No.12 and 20.

It’s no news that last season, the defense allowed 511 points and league-worst 30.1 points per game. Not only that, but they also conceded most touchdowns (59). So, Christian Parker, the new DC, has been trying to build the Cowboys' defense this offseason.

He has since signed S Jalen Thompson, as well as CB Cobie Durant, in free agency. Parker also got E Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick. For whom Schottenheimer said,

“Getting a chance to get a guy like Rashan Gary, who I’ve had to compete against a lot, he’s just an incredible football player, has been from the time he was a senior in high school through Michigan.”

He also mentioned his love for Thompson, Durant, and all the defensive players they had gathered for this season. He added that the board members, Jerry Jones, and others have done a good job setting everything up, too.

Given that the team has also re-signed WR George Pickens and RB Javonte Williams, it makes him confident that the Cowboys won’t have to enter next month’s draft to pick an athlete purely out of necessity.

Top Potential NFL Draft Picks For The Dallas Cowboys

According to several analysts, the top pick for the Dallas Cowboys remains E Rueben Bain Jr. from Miami, who recorded 54 total tackles, 9.5 sacks, and 1 interception last season.

Another prospect could be 6 feet, 190 lbs, CB Mansoor Delane from LSU, who has a 90.5 PFF Grade.

But now that it’s out in the open, HC Brian Schottenheimer plans to target talent on both sides of the ball in the draft; there could also be some, catching the Cowboys' eyes, such as WR Carnell Tate and RB Jeremiyah Love.

Both are considered top 10 offensive prospects in this year’s draft class. Last season, Tate recorded 51 receptions for 875 yards and 9 touchdowns, while RB Jeremiyah Love rushed for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns on 6.9 yards per carry.
