The Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had high praise for rookie safety Caleb Downs during OTAs, highlighting his ability to quickly learn from mistakes and make immediate rectifications.
During the OTA media sessions on June 4, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News asked Schottenheimer if there is too much hype on the draft picks, especially Caleb Downs, who hasn't worn shoulder pads in an official on-field activity.
"I think expectations on all high draft picks are real," Schottenheimer said, per X post of the Dallas Cowboys. "I thought one of the greatest compliments you could give a young player is that they don't repeat mistakes. If you tell Caleb one thing, he's made mistakes throughout the course of Phase 2 and OTAs, and even the last couple of practices. But he doesn't make the same mistakes twice."
Downs has been hyped since he headlined the 2026 NFL draft as a first-round pick (No. 11 overall).
He recorded a total of 257 tackles (164 solo), 1.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, and 12 passes defended for 44 games played across three collegiate years.
Schottenheimer believes that Downs ability to correct his mistakes and bring necessary changes immediately, as suggested, is what the 'Cowboys nation' is looking for.
"I think that's a very, very good thing for the Cowboy nation and us because at the end of the day, you don't want guys who repeat mistakes," Schottenheimer added.
His speed, ability to quickly grasp the game, and football intellect make him a strong candidate for such a role, according to Patrick Walker of Dallas Cowboys.com
But former Cowboys safety George Teague thinks otherwise. He believes the green dot carries a significant responsibility, which the rookie will be pressured to take on since Day 1.
Former Cowboys Safety Raises Green Dot Concerns for Caleb Downs
During his recent appearance on the 'DLLS Cowboys Podcast' on June 2, former Cowboys safety George Teague warned the rookie against taking up the green dot role in his first year.
"I considered myself very, very smart when I came into the league," Teague said. "I felt like I was prepared, I was high level... but coming in, I still wasn't ready to be that leader with that green dot."
Schottenheimer previously teased about training multiple players in the defense for that role, including new additions, rookies, and veterans.
"I wouldn't go there too early," Teague added. "... It took me four games to even really just feel comfortable with starting... then I was a nervous wreck in the first game, so it took me awhile to settle down. So, I think you need to hold off for that green dot for a second."
Though Downs is more than capable of taking that role, the rookie still needs to get adjusted to the game, and such responsibility may hinder his growth.
