The Dallas Cowboys will enter this NFL free agency having missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. Will owner and general manager Jerry Jones be aggressive in free agency this offseason?
As per Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap, an expert on the salary cap, Jones and the Cowboys are not showing a commitment to building a roster capable of postseason success.
Jerry Jones said, “I don’t want to sound by saying we’re going to be active in free agency, then disappoint and say that we weren’t.” The General Manager is still not making it clear how Dallas is going to approach the free agency market.

“That then brings me to the Dallas Cowboys. Their use of free agency is absurd,” Fitzgerald wrote. “They haven’t had any type of playoff success and have been inconsistent season to season.”
While the Cowboys have changed their approach to their coaching staff, it remains to be seen whether that same approach carries over to the playing roster.
“But if we have an opportunity in free agency, and we have more than one opportunity, we’re going to take advantage of the fact…,” said Jones. Is Jones hinting that Dallas will be eager in the free agency? Only time will tell.
Cowboys fans are growing increasingly impatient as they have not tasted a Super Bowl victory in three decades.
What can Dallas do this offseason in free agency?
The concern for Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, as well as their enormous fan base, is the defense. Offensively, they seem to be in a good place, with some contract restructuring to do.
Trading Micah Parsons away before the start of the season certainly did not help their cause. The defense allowed 511 points, this was a franchise record and an NFL high. The defensive unit also conceded about 30 points per game.
“Offense wins you games, defense wins you championships.” As the famous saying goes, the Cowboys' front office will need to prioritise the defense.
Kyle Van Noy, Edge, Dallas, can certainly use the help of this veteran edge rusher, but at 35, he might not be available for every game. Ar’Darius Washington, though he was out with an Achilles injury in 2025, made it back to the field the same season and can add value to the Cowboys' defense.
Cam Taylor Britt, who had a good 2023 and 2024, benched majorly in the 2025 season. An explosive Cornerback could be looking for a new home ahead of the 2026 season, and that home could be Dallas.
Last but not least, Leo Chenal, Linebacker. Dallas particularly struggled with this position in 2025. Chenal could be a good addition to the roster, but he could be a little costly.
