Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb admitted the unit has been difficult to prepare for during practice, calling the scheme "annoying" because of how much it disguises and changes looks before and after the snap.

"It's annoying. It's been annoying to prepare against, but obviously just seeing it practice every day…it's kind of unique, just seeing different guys communicate… It's good to go against, it's very tricky," said Lamb.

The challenge comes from Dallas' defensive overhaul under coordinator Christian Parker, whose system places a heavy emphasis on communication, disguise, and versatility.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer clarified that Parker’s 3–4 is not the old two-gap style, according to A to Z Sports. Instead, its focus lies in its vertical, aggressive style of play that is designed to force one-on-one blocking matchups.

It's the complexity of the defense that is proving difficult. There is a whole lot of communication that is involved. Brian Schottenheimer tells you exactly why Lamb is facing problems.

"This system that (Parker) is bringing to us, based on what comes from Vic Fangio, Vance Joseph, and guys like that who have been involved in it, makes you work post-snap, and that’s a big part of it," said Schottenheimer.

With the limited information that the defense is relaying, it makes the quarterback's job that much more difficult. This naturally makes the opposing quarterbacks hesitate.

The doubt leads to confusion in their minds, thinking about how the defense is going to play out.

DC Parker stresses multiplicity using 3-4,4-3 schemes and nickel looks. His system requires safeties, corners, and linebackers to constantly talk and adjust, creating confusion for opposing offenses.

The practices haven't been easy for Lamb, but he sees the benefit. Going against a revamped defense like this every day can only help his game.

The defensive change was the need of the hour, and even Cowboys owner Jerry Jones seconded that idea.

Jerry Jones Believes Defensive Errors Cost Cowboys Playoff Run

According to The Spun, owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys' defensive struggles played a major role in derailing their season. He believes the team could have made a serious playoff push if it had received better performances on that side of the ball.

"I'll tell you, when you have the challenges we had last year, there's no place to go but up on the defensive side of the ball. Had we played a lick of defense last year, we would've had ourselves, I think, a real playoff run," said Jones.

Jones pointed to a defense that allowed more than 500 points, 377 yards per game, and ranked 30th overall, leading to Matt Eberflus' departure. Dallas has since revamped the unit with additions such as Malachi Lawrence (EDGE) and Caleb Downs (DB).

Paired with an offense led by Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Javonte Williams, the Cowboys appear better equipped for a playoff push. According to Fox Sports, only the Rams are viewed more favorably heading into the season.
