As the Dallas Cowboys' defense unit learns a new scheme, defensive coordinator Christian Parker has identified one of the biggest changes he wants to implement in the 2026 season, which is 'improved communication'.
During the June 17 mandatory minicamp media session, Parker placed more importance on fixing the defensive play-call communication by concising lengthy terminology with shorter code-words.
“It's a long process because there are different word banks, you know,” Parker said, per the Dallas Cowboys YT Channel. “You've got weapons, NBA teams, insects, whatever. It’s like, do we have enough inventory here that's going to fit this type of scheme?"

Parker has developed a coded play-calling system and maintains an Excel document to organize the meaning behind every play-call word and the assignments attached to each player position.
"Or do we have enough S- and W-words [strong side, weak side], or F- and B-words [front side, back side], or whatever it might be?" Parker continued to explain his approach, per the Dallas Cowboys YT channel. "So it takes a lot to go into that; we try to be intentional with that, in terms of those words having meaning, certain letters having meaning."
He draws ideas from a variety of word banks, including weapons, NBA teams, and insects.
The first letter of each word, like ‘S, W, F, B,’ will have a built-in instruction that helps the players identify their responsibilities quickly.
"And you just don't want to have five or six word play calls when teams are going fast, and guys have to communicate that in the huddle and outside of it," Parker added, per DallasCowboys YT Channel. "So being able to condense that and have those things be very direct - that's a good process to go through.”
By condensing complex calls into a few coded words, Parker aims to create effective communication by eliminating confusion when the defense unit has to react at the game speed.
Schottenheimer Makes Bold Claim About Defensive Communication
According to Garrett Podell of CBS Sports, Schottenheimer was impressed with the 'increased on-field' and meeting room communication on the defensive line, under Parker's new system.
"You hear them all talking, really at all three levels," Schottenheimer said, per Garrett Podell of CBS Sports on June 18. "Another thing I'll say: our defensive line is communicating differently than most defenses I've been around with their anticipation of what runs are coming, what protections are coming, based on the formation sets and things like that."
Schottenheimer saw a visible shift in the defense communication during the offseason activities. He describes the defensive communication as 'direct' and 'of few words', similar to how Parker speaks in a concise manner.
"Not that it's easier to call, I am the all-time volume guy and verbiage guy as an offensive guy," Schottenheimer said. "It's cool to see these green dots rattle off these two or three words out of their mouths, which is a little different than what we did last year."
If the improved communication carries into the season, Parker's approach could play a major role in transforming the Cowboys' defense.
