The Dallas Cowboys had one of the worst (if not the worst) defenses in the 2025 NFL season.
To not repeat that in the 2026 season, they have brought in a new DC, Christian Parker. How does he plan on running the Cowboys' defense? He revealed his blueprint via the team’s official website on Wednesday.
"The first thing is we're going to be multiple. I think that whenever you form a defensive structure, it's about the players that you have," said Parker.
So our core principles, we'll be a 3-4 by nature, but 4-3 spacing will be appropriate, 4-2-5 in nickel, different front structures, coverages behind it. But I will say being multiple is probably the most important thing about it."
The 4-2-5 nickel is a proven one. In 2025, under defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks lived in nickel. They often played five defensive backs on a very high percentage of snaps. It helped them hold opponents to a league-low 3.7 yards per carry.
The Hawks also took their streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher to 26 games. It's a franchise record and the league's longest active streak. They were the league's number 1 defense allthe way to winning the Super Bowl.
The Dallas Cowboys' DC stressed tailoring the scheme to players’ strengths, creating favorable matchups, and protecting them when needed. "If we can win on blitzing a running back, then we're going to blitz a lot. If we got good man-to-man corners, we're going to play man. If we're better than zone vision, we'll play more zone," he said.
How Quickly is Christian Parker Looking to Change Things at the Dallas Cowboys?
"I don't think we want to put any expectations on it in that regard," Parker said when asked if he believes things can turn around swiftly in Dallas.
Christian Parker said that he plans on taking things day by day. "We'll get our head out of the sand at some point, but right now we got tunnel vision on doing things the right way," he added.
The Cowboys' defense has needs all over the field, from edge rusher to cornerback to coverage linebacker to safety to defensive tackle. They finished last (32nd) in passing yards allowed, surrendering 4,521yards through the air.
Their rush defense was better, but still the 10th-worst at 2,133 yards through the season. So Parker has a lot to address.
The Dallas Cowboys last won the NFC Conference Championship in the 1995 season. The hopes of winning are significantly lower when their defense allows the most points in the league (511). How long do you think Parker will take to fix this defense?
