Jerry Jones, the owner, general manager, and president of the Cowboys, has faced quite the backlash from the media; this time, it was Colin Cowherd who had quite a say.
Cowherd said on his show, Herd w/ Colin Cowherd, “They’re going to franchise tag the dramatic, sometimes high-maintenance, but marvelously talented wide receiver.”
Cowherd clearly is not a big fan of this move, neither approves it. However, he does recognize George Pickens' talent.
There is also a clip that is played on the show, where the Cowboys’ co-owner, Stephen Jones, makes a statement on the wide receiver.
“Yes, I’m sure he wants to be under a long-term contract. No one ever just loves the franchise tag. We want George here,” said Stephen Jones.
There is still no news on Pickens and the Cowboys agreeing to a new deal. The last update was, and still is, that they have placed the franchise tag on their lead wide receiver.
“For the record, I can’t quibble with what the Cowboys are doing in theory. It would be nice to occasionally, like the Seahawks or the Rams, get a player like Puka, at least at a bit of a discount for several years,” said Cowherd.
Cowherd does not understand what the Cowboys are doing with their offensive players and believes they need to look at other teams in the league and get players for a better price.
“It’s like the Cowboys have a self-imposed tariff on all their players. They walk out of the dealership. We got the Bentley 15% above asking price, and they brag about it,” said Cowherd.
What else did Cowherd say about the Dallas Cowboys?
There were other elements that Cowherd went into on his show apart from George Pickens.
“If you are a Dallas Cowboys fan, there’s a couple of realities. Your defense stinks, but you do have two first-round picks. Both of those should absolutely be used on your defense.”
The Cowboys’ fans will all be in consensus with that statement made by Cowherd. The 2025 defense was one of the worst defenses the NFL has ever seen.
Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones, as well as the whole front office, should take the advice given by Colin Cowherd and use those two first-round draft picks to strengthen their plagued defense.
Given that they do not have second-round and third-round picks, the Cowboys will need to use their first-round picks carefully. Going into free agency and the draft, defense should be the only priority for America’s team.
