Collin Cowherd Weighs In on Cowboys’ Strategy Amid Defensive Uncertainty

With Dallas ranking near the bottom of the league defensively, Collin Cowherd believes the franchise's focus on its high-priced offense is a critical error heading into the draft.

In 2025, they ranked 30th overall in total defense amongst all teams. Despite boasting an elite offense in Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens, they finished with a 7-9-1 record.

Speaking on his show, The Herd with Collin Cowherd, he said, “If you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan, there are a couple of realities. Your defense stinks, but you have two first-round picks, both of which should absolutely be used on your defense so you don’t have a second or a third.”

Cowherd highlighted that there are good edge rushers and safeties available in the first round, which the Cowboys could potentially target.

“It’s a pretty good defensive draft, especially edge rushers. There are a couple of corners in the first round, a couple of nice safeties. Cowboys should spend their draft picks on that,” he said.

Some notable names in the first round include Caleb Downs from Ohio State, safety Emmanuel McNeil Warren, and pass rusher T.J. Parker. It remains to be seen how the Cowboys utilize their first two round draft picks.

Collin Cowherd also spoke about the Cowboys’ expensive offense

Collin Cowherd also spoke on the franchise tag, which was placed on star wide receiver George Pickens.

He referred to George Pickens as “dramatic, sometimes high maintenance but marvelously talented”.

Cowherd believes the front office's spending on offense ignores the team's real issue on defense.

“I can't quibble with what the Cowboys are doing in theory. Offensive coach spending a lot of money, Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens are very good, but sometimes you can get a player like Puka at a discount for several years.”

He also noted that Brandon Aubrey, the kicker, is seeking the highest-paid contract for any kicker in the NFL. “It’s like the Cowboys have a self-imposed tariff on all their players. They walk out of the dealership with a Bentley at 15% above asking price and brag about it.”

Jerry Jones is looking to create cap space by restructuring several top players’ contracts. How the team uses this cap space in free agency, which starts in two weeks, will be critical.
