Overshown is entering the final year of his four-year, $5.39M rookie deal with the Cowboys. He said at the recent Cowboys Charity Home Run Derby that he approaches every season with the same mindset as long as he’s playing football.
"It's football for me," Overshown said. "Contract year or not, I have to come out here and play my best."
He also said his focus remains on staying healthy and being available for a full 17-game season, and that he believes the financial side will eventually “take care of itself.”
With staying healthy and available for a full season as his top priority, Overshown recently attended the event without wearing a knee brace.

“Biggest blessing I can ask for,” Overshown said. “I feel like everybody knows when I’m healthy, I’m one of the best linebackers in the league.”
He recorded 28 tackles in six games played after being back on the field in Week 11 of the 2025 season, according to Tommy Yarrish of Dallas Cowboys.com
He missed his rookie season in 2023 after suffering a torn ACL during the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.
However, he bounced back to the field in 2024, recording 90 tackles (56 solo), five sacks, and eight tackles for loss, proving his impact and potential.
“That’s not to toot my own horn, but the film and the stats speak for themselves when I’m on the field,” Overshown said. He also stated staying healthy is the biggest thing because it allows him to stay on the field and keep doing what he does best.
During a Week 15 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Overshown tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2024 season and much of 2025.
Though he has played only 19 games overall in his three years, he confidently claims that people haven't seen his best yet.
Despite missing significant time, Overshown remains one of the Cowboys’ most promising defensive pieces entering 2026.
Dallas Continues to Back Overshown’s Potential
Stephen Jones, COO of the Dallas Cowboys, during the NFL Annual Owners meeting in February, said he is looking forward to a healthy Overshown and ‘fired up about what he brings to the table’.
“I think the biggest thing is availability,” Stephen Jones said. “Certainly, no one wants to play the game more than him. I can assure you of that. But, obviously, he needs to put together a full season, and if he does, I think it’s going to be a great season.”
Dalton Wasserman of Pro Football Focus pointed him out as a ‘breakout candidate’ for the Cowboys in the upcoming season if he stays healthy.
“Dallas needs all the defensive help it can get, and the team should be able to rely on a healthy Overshown to improve the unit in 2026," Wasserman wrote.
Despite the Cowboys’ offseason additions, Overshown remains the team’s only established inside linebacker and a strong fit for Christian Parker’s 3-4 defensive scheme.
