Cowboys add ex-Giants RB while leaning on UFL pipeline

A quiet roster move has been drawing attention in Dallas, and rather than making splashy additions, the Cowboys continue to explore.

The Dallas Cowboys have added former New York Giants running back Deon Jackson as they continue to look for other roster options before training camp. The Cowboys are strengthening their depth at multiple positions while keeping costs manageable during the offseason.

"The Dallas Cowboys did not stop with the three UFL signings they made last week," wrote reporter Sami Haider on The Sporting News. "Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are also bringing in DC Defenders running back Deon Jackson and linebacker Micah Baskerville for workouts as the club keeps searching for low-cost roster help before training camp."

Deon Jackson has played for the Giants (2023) and the Indianapolis Colts (2021-2023) till now. He has NFL experience that could make him an interesting option for Dallas.

Jackson's versatility as both a runner and a pass-catcher can help him compete for a depth position.

He has recorded 95 rushing attempts for 283 rushing yards with two touchdowns and 35 receptions for 223 receiving yards with one touchdown across three years in the NFL.

Haider also highlighted Dallas' growing interest in the UFL. Many teams are exploring spring football leagues for players who might have been overlooked.

Dallas has also added Micah Baskerville(LB), who has impressed with the DC Defenders and can provide linebacker depth. The Cowboys have made it clear that competition will be a major theme entering camp, especially for backup roster spots.

These workouts are a low-risk approach for the Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, and the front office to improve the roster. Instead of committing resources in free agency, Dallas is examining players who have the potential to outperform and earn roles through camp performances.

While Dallas continues searching for roster depth, another storyline may have quietly spared the Cowboys from a much bigger long-term risk.

NFL saved Jerry Jones from costly Cowboys quarterback gamble

The Cowboys were recently linked to the supplemental draft prospect Brendan Sorsby (QB), but a surprising development may have saved Jerry Jones from making a controversial investment.

"Adding Brendan Sorsby to the QB room would have thrown another wrinkle into an already unsettled backup competition, but the decision was taken out of Jerry Jones' hands, as the NFL decided not to conduct a supplemental draft, forcing Sorsby to wait until 2027 to enter the league following a troubling betting scandal," wrote FanSided's Jerry Trotta.

Sorsby, the former Texas Tech QB, came under the spotlight when eligibility issues and a legal fight with the NCAA urged him to apply for the supplemental draft. Jones showed support for the supplemental draft process and the opportunity it created for teams looking for talent.

However, at the end, the NFL informed Sorsby that it would not hold a supplemental draft, mentioning that his issues were very closely tied to the core integrity interests, which also prevented Dallas from unnecessary complications.
