The Dallas Cowboys signed a former SMU standout, adding more depth to the wide receiver room after the retirement of WR Parris Campbell last week.
“The Cowboys have signed former SMU wide receiver Romello Brinson,” Tommy Yarrish reported via X post.
Brinson was one of the Miami Dolphins' tryout players at the team’s rookie minicamp this year, though he did not sign a contract with them.
The Cowboys previously showed interest in Brinson during SMU’s pro day, as they had a team dinner with him during the pre-draft process.
Brinson has recorded a total of 98 receptions for 1,393 yards and six touchdowns across five years of college. He began his collegiate career with the Miami Hurricanes before moving to the SMU Mustangs in 2023.
During his final college season at SMU in 2025, he recorded 43 receptions for 638 yards and three touchdowns, finishing second on the team in receiving production behind fellow Cowboys signee Jordan Hudson.
NFL analyst Lance Zierlein called Brinson a field-stretcher who is good at serious threats but doesn't have complete route-running skills, which are essential to win on intermediate routes.
“Brinson is a field-stretcher, but the middle of his route tree is missing branches,” Zierlein wrote. “He’s a long-strider with good acceleration to build speed and create opportunities for himself on vertical routes. His route-running is less effective on intermediate routes, where he’s slower in and out of breaks.”
With the training camp set to begin in late July, Brinson’s addition adds more depth to an increasingly competitive WR room.
Training Camp Could Decide Cowboys' WR Hierarchy
While WR CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are firmly in the top WR positions, the battle for WR3 and other roster spots would be one of the most closely watched battles heading into the 2026 season.
While Ryan Flournoy is highly projected to be the WR3, with KaVontae Turpin following close behind as the WR4, the roster spots behind them have tight competition.
According to Randy Gurzi of SI.com, veteran addition Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jonathan Mingo, 2026 draft pick Anthony Smith, and Traeshon Holden would be battling for the WR roster spot, possibly for WR5.
Valdes-Scantling would have to stand out among the younger players, but Mingo needs to prove himself to be on the roster.
The Cowboys have created plenty of competition behind Lamb and Pickens, setting the stage for a closely watched battle throughout training camp.
