Cowboys Add SMU Standout in First Post-Draft Move

USTA

The Dallas Cowboys didn't look far for talent after the 2026 draft, signing SMU’s Jordan Hudson as a priority free agent. The Garland native is staying home, bringing his reliable ball-tracking to a room hungry for new playmakers.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news on X, saying:

“Former SMU WR Jordan Hudson is staying in Dallas and signing with the Cowboys, " a source said.

A former five-star recruit and ESPN’s No. 12 overall prospect in 2022, the Texas native played for TCU before transferring to SMU to finish his collegiate career.

He posted a 4.48-second run at a 40-yard dash at the SMU Pro-day workout and reportedly had a private dinner with the Cowboys officials in March, per Tom Pelissero's X post.

According to Mike Fisher of Roundtable, the Cowboys may look to add depth to the WR room despite a strong duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.

Behind them, Dak Prescott has limited options in Ryan Flournoy and KaVontae Turpin, and as noted by Fisher, “the position thins out a bit after that.”

As a priority undrafted free agent, Hudson faces the same uphill battle as a late-round pick to secure a spot on the Cowboys' final roster. If he doesn't crack the active lineup initially, his local ties and standout SMU production make him a prime candidate to develop on the practice squad.

But what can Hudson bring to the table with the Cowboys?

What Can Hudson Bring to the Cowboys

During SMU’s Pro Day, Hudson didn't just showcase his hands; he made his intentions clear to Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News.

"I'm going to be the best blocker on your team."

And his production speaks volumes. Hudson had his best campaign in 2025, recording 61 receptions for 766 yards with 12.6 yards per reception, and 6 touchdowns across 11 games, earning third-Team All-ACC honors for his production.

Across 4 seasons, he played for a total of 53 games and recorded 144 receptions for 1,787 yards with an average of 12.4 yards per reception and 21 touchdowns.

In a scouting report about Hudson from NFL.com, Lance Zierlein stated that the college film of Hudson indicates constant productivity. However, even though he is blessed with elite athletic ability, Hudson struggled due to his poor technique and a lack of great speed.

Hudson’s addition to the team can make him an interesting fit for the Cowboys, as they look to add more depth to the offense, depending on offensive coordinator Klayton Adams’ scheme.

Do you think Hudson has what it takes to make the roster?
