Mark Cuban has spent more than two decades in Dallas sports. He first owned the Mavericks and is now a minority stakeholder. Cuban helped turn the Mavs into one of the city's biggest teams. Still, he admits they have ground to make up on the Dallas Cowboys.

Cuban made the comments during the Season 2 premiere of Free Range with Von Miller, the podcast hosted by Miller with Audacy. TJ Banks co-hosts the show, with Miller's Cowboys move providing the backdrop for a discussion about Dallas' sports culture.

"But in Dallas, the Cowboys are king. I love the Mavs. The Mavs are catching up a little bit, but the Cowboys are king,” Cuban said. “And when you have a great sports town with great teams like the Cowboys, the Mavs, the Stars, the Rangers, people fall in love with them."

Cuban grew up in Pittsburgh as a basketball fan before eventually making Dallas his home. During his 23 seasons as majority owner, Dallas reached the NBA Finals twice. The Mavs lost to Miami in 2006 before beating the Heat for the championship in 2011.

Speaking to Free Range with Von Miller's podcast on September 2, Cuban also revealed that he considered getting involved with other major sports franchises, including the Buffalo Bills, when the team was for sale.

He ultimately decided that owning another team would bring too much emotional investment. He had already experienced the highs and lows of an 82-game NBA schedule.

Miller's arrival gives Dallas another reason for the Cowboys to command that spotlight.

Miller joined Dallas on a one-year contract. At 37, he has already won two Super Bowls with two different teams.

Miller said winning another title with Dallas could help him reach a goal no player has accomplished. He would become the first player to win all three Super Bowls with the teams he played for.

"One of my personal goals is to win three Super Bowls with three different teams. Nobody’s ever done it," Miller said on his podcast.

He won Super Bowl 50 with Denver and Super Bowl LVI with the Rams. Miller said that desire was part of what pushed him to leave Los Angeles after winning its championship.

"That was part of the reason why I left L.A. after winning the Super Bowl, was to be able to have another chance to win with another team," Miller explained.

The Cowboys open their 2026 season Sept. 13 against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.
