Cowboys' Cautious Free Agency Approach Draws Scrutiny Amid Rams' Bold Trades

While the Los Angeles Rams are aggressive in their trade moves to add elite players, the Dallas Cowboys have taken a more conservative path. On defense, the Cowboys' cautious free agency approach has raised questions about their roster-building strategy.

During a recent episode on the K&C Masterpiece show on 105.3 The Fan, hosts Kevin Hageland and Cory Mageors, along with producer Alec, discussed the recent trades made on June 1 and how opposing teams were willing to part with their assets, while the Cowboys hesitated to make a move.

“I don't know exactly where the Cowboys are going to go,” Cory said. “Because you've seen them at places where they're just like, 'We won't pull the trigger on that trade. We aren't willing to give up this to get ourselves out of a position of getting the future, whatever, in the draft."

The Cowboys haven't made any major veteran additions despite entering the offseason with roster needs at linebacker and pass-rusher, following DE Micah Parsons' trade.

While offseason additions like edge rushers Rashan Gary and Malachi Lawrence are expected to bolster the pass-rush position, the Cowboys could benefit from adding another veteran edge rusher before training camp.

The hosts believe that while preserving draft capital can be beneficial in the future, the Cowboys have been overly cautious when it comes to sacrificing cap space and future assets to improve the roster in the present.

With quarterback Dak Prescott entering his 11th season in the league, the hosts argued that waiting for the right time may only shrink the Cowboys' Super Bowl window further.

The hosts also discussed Rams general manager Les Snead's strategy of trading away first-round picks while relying on later-round selections to find immediate starters.

Alec defended that approach, arguing that Snead's strong track record of identifying impact talent makes those aggressive moves easier to justify.

Why the Cowboys Never Made a Move for Myles Garrett

According to Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys never made a trade, as they wouldn't part ways with their future assets and also have fewer options at the "young, cost-controlled star at a premium position."

Browns general manager Andrew Berry told ESPN that they would trade Garrett for premium picks and young players who prove to be a cost-effective option for the franchise.

Though the Cowboys have DT Quinnen Williams and DE Donovan Ezeiruaku in that category, Williams wouldn't be a cost-saving option, and Ezeiruaku has no proven production yet.

The Cowboys ultimately passed on Garrett, unwilling to sacrifice the heavy draft capital and young talent required to secure the elite pass rusher.
