Within days of joining the Cowboys, safety Caleb Downs had already impressed the one person who matters most, defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

The versatile Ohio State star was the 11th overall pick, and Parker has already seen what sets Downs apart. According to team reporter Tommy Yarrish on X, Christian Parker shared his honest take,

"We have a lot of similarities," Parker said. “We're very excited to get him. The thing about him that I didn't know is just he's very inquisitive. He wants answers and he's not too proud to ask anything."

By bringing in Downs, the Cowboys hope he can fix their struggling defense, which was one of the worst in the league, ranking 31st in pass defense last year.

With his skill set and grounded personality, the rookie is positioning himself to be the focal point of the Cowboys' defensive rebuild this season.

"He's always looking to improve,” Parker added, “I think that he's found himself really gravitating towards his vets and trying to learn from them, because obviously they've experienced a lot of things that he's about to experience going into year one."

Downs is proving to be the ultimate chess piece for DC Christian Parker. Whether he is playing near the line of scrimmage at safety, locking down the slot as a nickel cornerback, or even returning punts on special teams, the rookie has proved his versatility.

Caleb Downs Is Having a Good Learning Experience With the Cowboys

During practices, the young safety is focused on adapting to the professional standard and learning the team's systems.

Downs is in a perfect position to grow, as he is surrounded by veteran safeties Malik Hooker, P.J. Locke, and Jalen Thompson. With 25 years of combined NFL experience, these veterans are providing the rookie with essential mentorship.

"It's going well," Downs said as per Dallascowboys. "A really good learning experience for me. Get acclimated with everything, how we practice, what the standard is, and everything like that. I think it's an awesome time and I'm looking forward to next week in minicamp."

However, there are also difficulties. As Downs admitted to having made some mistakes. But, he also said that he wants coaches to challenge him and give him as much responsibility as possible, believing that's the fastest way to grow.

Downs isn't discouraged by the difficulty; instead, he is using every tough practice session as fuel to improve before the season begins.
