Cowboys Earn Surprise NFC East Backing As ESPN Analyst Issues Bold Verdict

After missing the playoffs for two straight seasons, the Cowboys will look to bounce back this season. ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen came up with a bold verdict that would fuel the Cowboys to push harder.

Bowen believes Dallas can compete for the NFC East title in 2026, and he also shared the reason behind his belief.

“The key for 2026 is the defensive upgrades," he shared. "New coordinator Christian Parker will bring elements of Vic Fangio's system to Dallas. Edge rushers Rashan Gary and Malachi Lawrence, as well as safety Caleb Downs, boost the Cowboys' impact play ability. This team should compete for the NFC East title."

One of the highlights of the draft was the addition of defensive back Caleb Downs, who provides an immediate upgrade to the secondary. The addition of Downs has been viewed as one of Dallas' most impactful offseason moves.

He joins Dallas after spending the past two years with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The 2026 NFL Draft 11th pick recorded 164 solo tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and 12 pass deflections.

If he delivers at the pro level, the Cowboys may have found the centerpiece of Christian Parker’s defense, a player with the tools to become the next All-Pro success story in Christian Parker’s developmental pipeline.

Dallas also strengthened its pass rush by selecting edge rusher Malachi Lawrence with its second-round pick. The former First-team All-Big 12 edge rusher tallied 20 sacks in 47 games to rank 10th in UCF history. He added three forced fumbles over the last two seasons, showing sustained pass-rush production.

The Cowboys' defensive unit was destroyed last season, ranking 30th in the league. This offseason, their priority was to work on their defensive unit. Dallas used five draft picks on defensive players, including three straight to kick off this year's draft.

While Bowen's confidence stems largely from Dallas' defensive improvements, changes elsewhere could also strengthen the Cowboys' playoff chances.

Why Dallas' Path to the NFC East Looks More Favorable

As the NFL offseason unfolds with roster changes across the league, one big move involving the Philadelphia Eagles could end up indirectly favoring the Cowboys.

The Eagles sent star wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots. Brown, who is currently playing under a three-year contract worth up to $96 million. He is all set to begin a new chapter outside the NFC East.

From the Cowboys’ perspective, this move carries significant weight within the division.

Brown has recorded 44 receptions for 593 yards in eight career games against Dallas. His physical playing style often forced defensive adjustments for the Cowboys.

With new signings in the defense unit and Brown no longer in the division, Dallas could be in a stronger position to challenge for a playoff spot.
