CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens give the Cowboys one of the strongest wide receiver duos in the league, but the battle for the remaining receiver spots remains wide open heading into training camp, from July 29.
According to Cowboys insider Joseph Hoyt, wide receivers Ryan Flournoy and KaVontae Turpin are considered locks for the No. 3 and No. 4 receiver roles. The competition for the fifth and potentially sixth spots includes Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Anthony Smith, Traeshon Holden, and Jonathan Mingo.
“Perhaps the most intriguing candidate is former undrafted free agent wide receiver, Traeshon Holden… He appeared higher in the rotation during minicamp than some on the outside might've expected,” Hoyt wrote.
Hoyt also suggested Jonathan Mingo could be among the receivers under the most pressure after struggling to establish himself since arriving in Dallas.

Holden isn't the only receiver fighting for a roster spot. Veterans Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Jonathan Mingo, along with rookie Anthony Smith, are also expected to compete for the final places on the depth chart.
Valdes-Scantling is on his eighth roster since 2021 and has 3,686 receiving yards in his career. The veteran's experience and ability to contribute on special teams could improve his chances of earning one of the final roster spots, according to Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News.
Smith, meanwhile, is a seventh-round pick out of East Carolina and is another name Hoyt believes is worth watching during the roster battle.
Jonathan Mingo’s spot could be another factor in the Cowboys’ final receiver decision. Dallas acquired the former Panthers second-round pick at the 2024 trade deadline, but he has struggled to make a major impact since joining the team.
The Cowboys will decide their final receiver spots based on who performs best during training camp and preseason as they build the group behind CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
As the Cowboys sort through the receivers behind their top two options, Pickens has made it clear where his focus lies entering the season.
George Pickens shares his priority after signing the Cowboys deal
George Pickens enters the season with his future already settled after signing his non-exclusive franchise tag in April. Speaking to Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' official website, the receiver reiterated that his focus remains on winning.
The wide receiver is now under a one-year, $27.3 million fully guaranteed deal, and he cannot receive a contract extension until after the 2026 regular season.
“What's important to me is winning,” Pickens said. “Like I said from the beginning, I always want to bring a Super Bowl to a group of guys that never had that feeling. That's really the most important part to me.”
Pickens missed the voluntary portions of the Cowboys’ offseason program but returned for mandatory minicamp from June 16-18.
After his first practice back, he made it clear that he does not plan to hold out during training camp or the regular season.
With Lamb and Pickens locked into the top two roles, the Cowboys' biggest decision at receiver now shifts to which players can do enough in training camp and preseason to secure the remaining spots.
