Cowboys Face Key RFA Decision as Brandon Aubrey Eyes New Deal

The Dallas Cowboys Kicker Brandon Aubrey is a restricted free agent this offseason.

While there is no doubt that Aubrey deserves the best compensation for the kicker role, the Cowboys' front office and Aubrey have not yet agreed on a deal that is comfortable for both.

The Dallas Cowboys are looking to retain him by placing a second-rounder tender at a value of $5.8 million. This Restricted Free Agent tender is provided to players who have three accrued seasons and whose contract has now expired.

The highest-paid kicker in the NFL will still be Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs for $6.4 million per year.

Todd Archer reports that the Cowboys had offered a deal close to $7.6 million, but sources told ESPN that Aubrey’s agent, Todd France, has asked for a deal close to $10 million per year.

The restricted free agent tender will keep Aubrey on the team for one year, and the Cowboys could also consider franchise tagging him for the following year, too.

Regardless of the Cowboys giving a second-round RFA tender to Aubrey, he can still accept offers from other teams. The Cowboys then have an option to match the offer. If the Cowboys do not match the offer, they will then receive a second-round draft pick in exchange.

Brandon Aubrey was signed to the Cowboys in 2023. He started his career playing soccer for Notre Dame, then tried football and became a kicker. He then played for the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL, winning two championships.

After being signed by the Cowboys, Aubrey has been a Pro Bowler for all three seasons. He also holds the record for the most field goals (6) from 60 yards or higher in the NFL.

Stephen Jones is looking to retain Aubrey

Stephen Jones is well aware that he needs to retain Aubrey if the Cowboys have any chance of making it to the playoffs next season.

Jones recently spoke to reporters, saying, “We’ve been working on a long-term deal for some time. We’ve exchanged offers, and the goal is to get him signed. We love him. He wants to be here, so that part is accomplished."

Jones is also working on retaining other key players. They recently signed Javonte Williams to a three-year $24 million deal. They have also confirmed that they would be placing the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens.
