Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' comments are not sitting well with fans. His positive spin on a lackluster free agency goes against everything he promised.
When the Associated Press questioned Jones on the Cowboys' acquisitions so far, Jones had positive things to say about his signings.
"Yes. I think we're within the boundaries of what we have available, what we're trying to accomplish with draft picks and with cap. I wouldn't try to revisit or try to re-do what we've done on either that cap or the trades we've made. I like what we got.”
Jerry Jones started the offseason with bold comments about “busting the budget” during free agency. Earlier this year, Jones told journalists that his team would look to spend in key areas.
"I would bet that we will spend more money in free agency than we have... I want to do everything we possibly can to stop somebody and to basically win some third downs more than we did last year. So I think that would be the area that you would see me bust the budget."
Despite Jones’ comments, the Cowboys have not brought out the checkbook yet. So far, they have signed safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year, $36 million deal and traded for Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers for a fourth-round pick.
The Cowboys were expected to sign either Maxx Crosby or Trey Hendrickson, but neither deal materialized. To add to the mix, LB Nakobe Dean picked the Las Vegas Raiders over the Cowboys, leaving a gaping hole in the linebacker position.
In a very confusing move, Jones has also traded away Osa Odighizuwa to the San Francisco 49ers for a third-round pick.
Given the current standings, Jones’ positivity was not well-received by fans.
Fans Are Not Happy With Jones’ False Promises
Fans were expecting some big-name signings for the Cowboys. However, this season might be the same old story playing out year after year.
One fan vented out frustration, saying, “That franchise HATES spending money on great players… they bargain shop on every player they have.. won't spend no more than 6 mill a year on FA players… CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP.. one of the richest organizations on the planet and won't spend to make the team legit.”
Another fan questioned Jones’ pre-season comments on busting the budget.
"Within the boundaries of what we have available" isn’t quite "bust the budget", the fan wrote.
There are still major positions that have gaps, including the linebacker position. Jones, however, has not addressed it yet and seems content with his signings.
Speaking about the linebacker position, one frustrated fan wrote, “So basically he is not going after anyone else? Sad. Would love a legit starting LB. Bummer. Budget has not been busted.”
Longtime Cowboys fans are also tired of false promises year after year. In 2024, it was all about the Cowboys going “all in” and this year was about “busting the budget”, neither of which has materialized.
“I f****** hate this team now more than ever. I'm so sick of the same thing every year. Been dealing with this for 20 years. So over it,” a long-term fan wrote.
“He’s “like what we got” and been “comfortable” for the last 30 years…” another fan chimed in.
