Cowboys Get Major Update on Markquese Bell's Arrest

Apr 13, 2026, 12:15 PM CUT

The Dallas Cowboys safety, Markquese Bell, was arrested on April 10. Since then the fans were awaiting an update. Turns out a legal turn is making the case move fast.

According to the records from the Collin County Sheriff’s Office, Bell's charges include a felony count of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor count of possession of m********.

As reported by fishsports, Cowboys insider, Bell's case moved from being filed to "closed" by Saturday, April 11, 10:19 a.m. It can hint at multiple possibilities. Either the complaint was withdrawn, or the evidence was insufficient. Then comes the confusing part.

Apparently as per sources, Bell has filed for “Affidavit of Indigency”, citing his financial incapacity to afford legal fees.

Interestingly, Bell is stepping into his second year of a three-year, $9 million deal that included a $2.5 million signing bonus. The deal came last spring. Its reportedly with the amount that Bell purchased a home in the Frisco area worth $1.1 million, according to Associated Press.

While all these might be confusting, fans will have to wait for the full court details to drop in. According to Associated Press, police in the suburb of Prosper said an officer could smell m******** after Bell was pulled over on Friday night.

During the search, officers discovered less than two ounces of marijuana and a THC electronic c******** inside the vehicle. After this, he was taken into custody. A spokesman for the Cowboys said the club was aware of the arrest and declined to comment further.

Players getting entangled in legal troubles is not new for Dallas. Before Bell, the  Cowboys All-Pro kick returner KaVontae Turpin was arrested in July last year due to overspeeding.

Deiric Jackson, Bell's agent, said his client would let the legal process play out.

What’s Next for Markquese Bell in Cowboys Defense?

Bell, a key rotational piece, played all 17 games and posted 41 total tackles (20 solo), one interception, and three passes defended in 2025. The 2023 season was the peak for Bell, who came up with 94 tackles (60 solo).

Impressed with his performance, Dallas came up with an extension. Bell entered the 2025 offseason as a restricted free agent, but due to his undrafted status, the Cowboys could not apply a standard tender. Instead, they placed a Right of First Refusal on him.

Dallas followed it up with a three-year, $12 million contract averaging $4 million per year. Bell’s absence would impact the unit’s flexibility, particularly in hybrid roles.

No matter how dependent the Cowboys are on Bell, will he receive a second chance? The safety got into a physical altercation with tight end Tyler Neville ahead of the 2025 season. Back then he had already received a warning from head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Now that it's an off field issue, how will the Cowboys deal with it? Share your thoughts.
