Dallas Cowboys' offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is a big fan of Bobby Wagner. During a recent interview, he called the veteran linebacker a 'total stud,' fueling speculation that Dallas could target him.
Brian Schottenheimer, HC of the Dallas Cowboys, was in praise of Bobby Wagner during a recent interview. The player may just be the answer for the roster gap at the linebacker position of the team. He has previously worked with Wagner during his time with the Seattle Seahawks from 2018 to 2020.
During his appearance on Up & Adams with Kay Adams, Brian Schottenheimer was asked about linebacker Bobby Wagner. He didn’t hesitate to praise him.
“You’re looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world, being in Seattle with him for three years and watching him compete and just talk trash in a good way," the head coach revealed. "I love that guy, and he’s still playing at a high level. So we’ll see how everything works out. It’s an exciting time of year. But Bobby Wagner, total stud.”
While Adams had brought Wagner up, hoping to see him continue playing, Schottenheimer’s admiration made it clear that he shares the same high regard for the veteran linebacker.
Over his 14-year NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks, the Washington Commanders, and the Los Angeles Rams, Bobby Wagner has played 219 games, recording 2,000 total tackles (1150 solo stops, 850 assisted tackles), 39.5 sacks, 15 interceptions, and even one intercepted touchdown.
Wagner’s standout season came in 2023 with the Seahawks, when he recorded his career-high-best 183 combined tackles (96 solo), 3.5 sacks, 11 tackles for losses, and 3 passes defended, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier linebackers and a cornerstone of Seattle’s defense.
Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport labeled him an aging free agent with the potential to be a true difference-maker and also suggested Dallas could be the ideal landing spot.
"As it happens, the Dallas Cowboys also happen to have a glaring need in the middle of the league's worst defense last year," Davenport noted.
Back in his prime, Bobby Wagner was commanding elite money for a reason. His 2019 extension with the Seattle Seahawks, a three-year, $54 million deal with over $40 million guaranteed, briefly made him the highest-paid middle linebacker in the league.
Even with a rookie addition, the Cowboys will need a reliable veteran, and Wagner fits the bill perfectly, with Brian Schottenheimer open to bringing him in.
He isn’t the only one though, other teams are also eyeing the ten-time Pro Bowler for his leadership and ability to guide young players.
Bobby Wagner Eyes Another NFL Season Amid Multiple Team Interests
Veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner, turning 36 in June, is still a free agent with several teams showing interest.
While the Washington Commanders have left the door open for a reunion, they may prioritize youth at the position.
Another top team that is projected to draft Wagner is the Dallas Cowboys, fresh off the league’s worst scoring defense in 2025, which could use his experience to mentor a young unit.
The Buffalo Bills may have added pieces like Bradley Chubb, but the real concern still sits in the middle. After giving up the fifth-most rushing yards and a league-high 24 rushing touchdowns, the need for a stabilizing presence is clear. That is where Bobby Wagner fits perfectly.
Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos find themselves at a similar crossroads. With Dre Greenlaw gone and questions lingering next to Alex Singleton, there is room for an upgrade. While Justin Strnad is an option, bringing in a proven name like Wagner on a one-year deal could instantly help.
Despite some decline in coverage, Wagner is reportedly planning to play another season on a short-term deal.
