The Dallas Cowboys saw their defensive cracks exposed last season, and as 2026 approaches, a familiar Super Bowl-winning voice may now hold the key to fixing what went wrong.
Hall of Famer Michael Irvin has officially delivered his scouting mandate directly to the staff on his X account.
"Coach and I @CanesFootball Pro Day. I told Coach we need as many guys as we can get from the U !!!!," Irvin posted on his X account.
Though Irvin's draft pick advice has yielded results in the past, selections from the Miami Hurricanes have been rarer in the last decade.
The Dallas Cowboys-Miami Hurricanes football connection is a talking point since Irvin's round 1 selection back in 1988. Later, these selections peaked in the early 90s with Russell Maryland and Kevin Williams arriving together in 1991.
The trend carried through with Robert Wilson in 1994 and Coleman Bell in 1997, before fading, only to briefly resurface with Dedric Ward in 2004. The early 90s delivered back-to-back Hurricanes picks within a three-year window, but after 1997, the gap stretched.
With cap crunch concerns and draft capital in hand, now, the pressure is on the NFL draft 2026
Past Decisions Add to Pressure on the NFL Draft
Pressure is already building around Brian Schottenheimer as the Dallas Cowboys look ahead to 2026.
With significant money tied up in the secondary, from Trevon Diggs’ $97 million extension to DaRon Bland’s reported big-money deal, the draft picks will decide a lot now.
This could now push Dallas toward adding a rookie playmaker to rebalance the roster.
Akheem Mesidor is a fascinating option. He recorded 63 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 2025. However, age and past injuries have actively hurt his draft value.
Scouts currently expect him to fall into the twenties. That easily keeps him in play for Dallas later in the first round.
Defensive end Reuben Bain Jr. can also be a premium pass-rushing target. He wrapped up his final collegiate campaign with 54 tackles and 9.5 sacks.
The front office still has elite talent who can bolster the Cowboys' performance.
What do you think will be the Next step of Dallas Cowboys? Will they implement the advice of Irvin or not?
