Former Denver Broncos defensive end Von Miller had hinted at a possible homecoming with the Dallas Cowboys during his recent activities through social media and interviews. One Cowboys insider outlined a more realistic role for the two-time Super Bowl Champion that could strengthen the depth at the pass rusher position.
During the recent episode of Locked On Cowboys on July 9, hosts Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool discussed that the eight-time Pro Bowler could be more of a rotational piece to the team, rather than a starter at pass rush.
"Having another veteran like that around Lawrence and Ezeiruaku would be really valuable," McCool said. "The question is money and timing... he still has some juice left and could be a useful rotational piece. But if you need it, you need it - pass rush is such a necessary job that if you're three-quarters through camp and Ezeiruaku and Lawrence clearly can't handle it early in the season, you may not have a choice."
McCool said in the Locked on Cowboys podcast that Miller could serve as a mentor for young players like Donovan Ezeiruaku and rookie Malachi Lawrence and work as an effective edge rusher in depth behind James Houston or Sam Williams.

They projected a late signing of Miller in training camp, after Week 1, on a week-by-week deal, as the Cowboys shouldn't risk injury to the veteran pass rusher.
Since 2023, Miller has had just three starts in the last three seasons, across 42 appearances, and his defensive snap rate has been in the 32-37% range.
"But you're bringing in Von Miller with the idea that he's gonna give us nine snaps a half as a pass rusher, and that's all we need him for," Mosher said. "We can cobble together the run defense. We can figure out the special teams unit. He's just the best option."
Mosher believes that despite his age, Miller could produce around a 12-13% pass rush win rate, as he has averaged 361 snaps per season over the last six years.
Mosher and McCool believe that, though Miller doesn't play in special teams, he could be a valuable low-risk, low-snap count option who could be paired with younger edge rushers in a rotational role.
Von Miller's Dallas roots could strengthen the Cowboys' fit
Mosher and McCool, during the same Locked on Cowboys podcast on July 9, discussed Miller's personal ties to Dallas as a factor for considering signing him.
"Yeah, all the personal symmetry - where he lives, the relationships with several members of this coaching staff, line up really well in NFL terms for why this could be a reality," McCool said during the same Locked on Cowboys podcast.
They highlighted his DeSoto roots, his collegiate experience at Texas A&M, and his family residing in Dallas.
Miller is familiar with the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, from his stint as a defensive backs coach (2021-2023) with the Broncos.
Miller also has a rapport with Cowboys pass rush coach BT Jordan, which could be advantageous for Miller to join the defensive scheme of the Cowboys, which he is familiar with.
Do you think Miller would be an asset for the Cowboys?
