The Dallas Cowboys appear set with Javonte Williams as their starting running back, but questions surrounding the depth behind him continue to fuel speculation. One recent report has now identified four-time Pro Bowler Nick Chubb as a perfect fit in Dallas.

According to Sports Illustrated writer Gray Deyo, Chubb is among the best remaining free-agent running backs. He could provide the Cowboys with proven depth behind Williams, whose injury history remains a concern despite a career-best 2025 campaign.

"The two RBs currently behind Williams on the Cowboys RB depth chart are Jaydon Blue and Malik Davis," Deyo wrote on July 10. "Both players had under 300 rushing yards in 2025. Chubb would be a certain upgrade from the two and would be a decent RB handcuff to have on a fantasy roster if he were to sign with Dallas."

Williams had the best season of his career in 2025, rushing for 1,201 yards and nine touchdowns, as reported by Gray Deyo of SI.

Behind him, Dallas has little experience. Blue and Davis combined for fewer than 400 rushing yards, while rookie Phil Mafah is still fighting for a role.

Chubb stayed healthy for most of last season, appearing in 15 games for Houston. He rushed for 506 yards and scored three touchdowns after injury-hit years earlier in his career.

However, not everyone agrees with Deyo's choice. Another SI analyst swung radically in the opposite direction.

Another analyst questions whether Nick Chubb is the right fit

Still, a move to Dallas is far from certain. Sports Illustrated's Mike Moraitis acknowledged Chubb to be among the top free agents left on the market but questioned whether he would be an upgrade for the Cowboys.

Moraitis noted that Chubb no longer displayed the explosiveness that once made him one of the NFL's premier running backs.

He also pointed out that the veteran offers limited value as a receiver, leaving Dallas with the same need for a passing-down option behind Williams. But not everyone shares that view.

"In my opinion, Chubb is the one. If I were to give a chance to any of the three, he's the one I'd go with," Adam Schultz wrote, per Roundtable.

Moraitis ultimately reached a different conclusion, arguing Dallas would be better off trusting its younger backs rather than signing a veteran entering his age-31 season.

The Cowboys will get a closer look at Blue, Davis and Mafah once training camp opens later this month. If none of them secures the RB2 role behind Williams, speculation surrounding Chubb's future could quickly intensify.
