Cowboys linked to future HoF Bobby Wagner ahead of training camp

Bobby Wagner is 36 years old and still one of the most productive linebackers in football. And yet, he remains unsigned. With training camp approaching, the Dallas Cowboys make an ideal landing spot for Wagner, and not just to fulfill roster needs.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has a long history with Wagner. Wagner and Schottenheimer spent three years together at the Seahawks. During an episode of Up & Adams in March 2026, the coach expressed his respect and support for Wagner.

"You're looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world. I love that guy," Schottenheimer told Kay Adams, per Bleacher Report reporter Kristopher Knox.

Per Knox's July 3 Bleacher Report article, Dallas was noted as the best spot for Wagner. He stated that the veteran LB's leadership and production could potentially be the answer to the offseason puzzle that was Dallas' defense.

Wagner has finished his 14th consecutive season racking up over 100 tackles. He started all of the games in Washington's 2025 campaign and wrapped up the season with 162 tackles in addition to 4.5 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, and 2 interceptions.

Wagner also shows up after winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2025.

Dallas also offers Wagner a good combination of fit and need. The Cowboys were the 30th-ranked defense, and they don’t have anyone who can strengthen the run defense on the second level. Wagner would fill that hole for the 2026 season.

He brings the type of leadership and defensive communication that the young Cowboys defense, working under first-time defensive coordinator Christian Parker, sorely needs. Based on this, it's easy to see why Wagner would be a good fit for the Dallas team.

While those numbers already say a lot, his peers have also had their say about where they see him standing.

Wagner makes the NFL Top 100 list

Despite being released by the Washington Commanders, the NFL still recognizes the veteran linebacker’s talent. Wagner was ranked number 81 on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2026, a player-voted ranking.

It shows how much respect he continues to earn from the players in the league.

Even players who were crushed on the field by Wagner weekly remained amazed by his talent, thus earning him a spot in the top 100 players.

The Washington Commanders moved on from Wagner, but the rest of the league demonstrated they weren't ready to move on from him.

The Commanders unveiled their linebacker position ahead of training camp later this month. The franchise decided to focus on the team's long-term stability by going for new prospective talent.

GM Adam Peters and HC Dan Quinn released Wagner due to his age and to restructure the 2025 shortfall.

Although Wagner played a big role in their middle defense, Washington went in a younger direction, and training camp will be their first real test.
