To bolster their front four for the 2026 season, the Dallas Cowboys have been linked to a high-impact former Washington star. This association comes as the team aggressively reshapes its defensive identity under Brian Schottenheimer.
The staff writer of Blogging the Boys, Brandon Loree, reported on his X about Brian Schottenheimer’s comment on the ten-time Pro Bowler Bobby Wagner.
“I don’t know why, but I can’t get how Brian Schottenheimer talks about Bobby Wagner out of my head. It’s a couple of months later, but Dallas + Wagner remain a perfect match for both sides.”
During the NFL annual meeting, Schottenheimer attended a segment of the Up & Adams show, where he was questioned about the conversations he had about Bobby Wagner. And in reply, he hinted at a reunion.
“Well, I will say this. Number one, we've made some really strong runs at inside linebackers. It hasn't worked out. “I love that guy, and he's still playing at a high level. So, we'll see how everything works out. It's an exciting time of year, but Bobby Wagner, total stud.”

This offseason, the Cowboys brought in many new athletes on their defense, including the linebackers Dee Winters and Jaishawn Barham. And given that LB Bobby Wagner is still a free agent coming off two seasons with the Commanders, he might prove to be a fruitful addition to the room.
Playing for the Washington Commanders, he recorded 162 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions in 2025 under a one-year, $9M deal and reached his 2000 combined tackles mark, joining Ray Lewis and London Fletcher.
From 2018 to 2020, Schottenheimer served as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, while Wagner anchored the defense there, which suggests HC Schottenheimer might know him up close.
There was another instance that suggested that the Cowboys are not totally over another linebacker addition.
Schottenheimer Addresses the Linebacker Situation
As per NFL analyst and writer Nick Harris, Schottenheimer stated that the Dallas Cowboys are all set with linebackers Dee Winters, Jaishawn Barham, and Curtis Robinson joining phase one of the offseason workouts.
They’ll be evaluated soon after the offseason workout ends this week, and the focus remains on them training with Christian Parker and Scott Symons to get them all on the same page as the other athletes on the roster.
He also seemed content with the newest linebacker additions to the team. However, he hasn’t put out a total block on adding another linebacker to the mix.
“No, I’m comfortable with where we are. We’re not NOT looking. We’re not evaluating… We’re never closed for business,” Schottenheimer said.
So, perhaps, the Cowboys are still keeping an eye on Bobby Wagner, while also getting ready for the upcoming season.
