Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office seem to be working overtime to solve the $60 million cap crunch problem this offseason.
One of the casualties to fall as a result of this is 25-year-old defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey, who saves $1.075 million in cap space for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys signed Winfrey in 2025 on a $2 million deal for two years. Winfrey has not had the season he expected with the Cowboys. He injured his back in pre-season and got sidelined after that. He managed to play just one game, with two tackles in 34 defensive snaps.
Before joining the Cowboys, Winfrey was part of the Cleveland Browns, where he was selected as the 108th pick. He appeared in 13 games, with half a sack and 22 tackles. Winfrey, however, had several issues with the Browns regarding discipline and punctuality.
He was then relegated to the UFL, where he showed promise with Birmingham, and then was signed by the Cowboys. Winfrey has not had a chance to showcase his skills yet, with injuries forcing him to be sidelined early.
Multiple contract restructurings were done for the Cowboys
Jerry Jones has said he is working to restructure key contracts to make room for the salary cap.
Speaking at the NFL Combine, Jones said, "We'll make the adjustments that you'd think we'd make and spread that out so we can get the players that we want to get."
While letting go of Winfrey saves them a marginal $1.075 million, Jones has also restructured key contracts, including those of Dak Prescott, star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and Tyler Smith.
With these restructurings, they have created a $66 million room, but are still struggling to fit in the cap space for the roster they plan to build.
The Cowboys' defensive line currently has Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Osa Odighizuwa, and Solomon Thomas, all of whom will look to keep a solid defense for 2026.
However, the point does remain that the Cowboys need to sign key defensive players to add flexibility and depth to the squad.
