The Dallas Cowboys are not short on a starter at running back, but questions surrounding their depth at the position have apparently opened the door to an unexpected trade conversation.

Bleacher Report's Moe Moton reports the Cowboys have become a possible post-June 1 trade destination for Saints veteran Alvin Kamara.

New Orleans signed Travis Etienne to a four-year, $48 million contract as their new lead back and still carries Kendre Miller and Devin Neal on the roster, making Kamara expendable despite his stated interest in remaining with the Saints.

Moton's report via Bleacher Report identifies Dallas as one of the top potential suitors for the five-time Pro Bowler.

Javonte Williams becomes the Cowboys' main running back in 2026 after he achieved a breakout 2025 season with 1,201 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns at a 4.8 yards per carry average, which resulted in a three-year contract extension. 

The Cowboys include Malik Davis and Jaydon Blue, who they selected in the sixth round of the 2025 draft as backup running backs behind Williams.

Kamara's 2025 production was limited to 131 carries for 471 yards and one touchdown across 11 games.

The 2024 season saw him achieve 950 rushing yards and six touchdown runs, while he made 68 receptions that resulted in 543 receiving yards, highlighting the pass-catching versatility he adds to Brian Schottenheimer's offense.

New Orleans faces more than $18 million in dead cap charges if they move Kamara before June 1, while post-June 1 trades create easier transaction procedures for the team. 

The 2027 NFL Draft presents a challenge to the Cowboys because they possess limited resources after their first three rounds of selections.

Cowboys Face Giants in 2026 Sunday Night Football Opener

The upcoming season opener provides immediate context for Dallas' roster decisions, when Dallas visits the Giants to kick off a new coaching era.

The NFL announced on May 11, 2026, that the Giants will host the Cowboys on September 13 in the first Sunday Night Football game of the 2026 season, which will begin at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

The game marks the debut of head coach John Harbaugh with New York, following his hiring in January after 18 seasons as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

The last time these teams met in a season opener was 2023, when the Cowboys defeated the Giants 40-0 at MetLife Stadium.

The Cowboys won six out of seven Week 1 games, which they played against the Giants, while the Giants achieved a record of 1 win and 9 losses against the Cowboys during the last five seasons.

The upcoming match between the NFC East rivals will mark their eighth opening game clash in the last 15 years. Harbaugh has achieved an 11-7 record in regular-season openers, a record established during his 18-year tenure in Baltimore.
