Cowboys’ New QB Makes Intentions Behind Dallas Move Clear

Amidst all the attention to the defense, the Cowboys and Jerry Jones have bolstered their quarterback room. And former free agent Sam Howell isn't wasting any time making his intentions known.

At 25 years of age, Howell still believes he has a lot of football ahead of him and put his first-string QB on notice.

“I think there is a lot of good football ahead of me, I think the opportunity to develop under (Brian Schottenmeier) is obviously something that was very enticing to me, which ultimately kind of led to me wanting to come here.”

Through his career, Howell has played only 21 games in his four seasons as a pro. The QB has thrown the ball 645 times and connected on 404 of those attempts. Howell has recorded 4,139 yards and has 22 touchdowns to his name.

Dak Prescott will be the unanimous first-string quarterback to lead the offense. Howell will always be ready when he gets some snaps his way.

“I’m just excited to be there. Try to make the (QB) room better. We’ll all try to make each other better every single day. That’s kind of the mentality and mindset I have coming in. At the end of the day, we’re there to support Dak and try to help Dak get better along the way.”

The quarterback has formerly played for the Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, and the Philadelphia Eagles. Apart from the Commanders, where he had the starting job, Howell has primarily been a backup choice QB, and that role will continue at Dallas.

Why The Dallas Cowboys Went for Howell

Most speculation centered on the Cowboys spending heavily on defense. Surprisingly, on day two of free agency, Jones signed a quarterback in Sam Howell.

Jon Machota of The Athletic was on 105.3 The Fan and said, “For me, it’s all about when it happened. If you told me that they did this move with Sam Howell, like next week or something, because he was just out on the open market, I’d feel a bit differently... To do that (at the start of free agency), that makes me think they want competition for Joe Milton.”

Dak Prescott, Joe Milton, and Sam Howell currently make up the QB room at the Cowboys. While Dak is going to start, there will be a fight for the second-string quarterback.
