Jerry Jones knows something has to change in Dallas. The Cowboys owner made a surprising admission about his own decision-making, acknowledging his old methods are not working.
Jones spoke to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, saying, “When you’re set up the way I am, that old mirror, that self-evaluation really is appropriate and has to be done,” Jones said.
“My way of doing things doesn’t work if I don’t change. I’m not successful, then I haven’t [changed]. There’s no other way.” Jones told Watkins.
Times are now changing at the Dallas Cowboys’ front office. It was a much-welcome decision for fans when the Cowboys hired new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, after the disastrous season of last year with Jones’s hire of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

This time, the Cowboys searched beyond their usual radius, looking for new up-and-coming talent, unlike previous years, when they looked to old head coaches to fill staff spots.
“I probably put too much emphasis on their individual place in life, their individual place in the profession, and should be more attentive to what’s coming out of the box today. And that is all that counts, is tomorrow,” he said.
This cultural shift from Jones should aid the coaching staff's efforts this offseason.
Schottenheimer is looking to build a good defense this season
The Dallas Cowboys had arguably one of the best offensive powerhouses in the 2025 season. However, the same can’t be said for their defense.
Last season, the Cowboys ranked No.30 in the league in total defense. They allowed a league-high of 60 touchdowns and 377 total yards per game.
This season could be different. Jones and Schottenheimer’s hire of Christian Parker can bring much-needed change to the Cowboys’ defense.
At 32, he is the youngest defensive coordinator in the Cowboys’ history. He earlier worked under Vic Fangio and plans to bring some of Fangio’s tactics to the Cowboys. He was also part of the coaching team that led the Philadelphia Eagles to winning Super Bowl LIX.
This offseason will be critical for the Cowboys to build a strong defense and keep their offense intact. With a major decision involving George Pickens, the upcoming months will determine if the Cowboys can build a competitive roster for the 2026 season.
