Cowboys' positive takeaways and results from joint-practice with Rams

The Dallas Cowboys' training camp began on July 29. Although the players looked in shape, their biggest challenge came when they faced the Los Angeles Rams in a scrimmage practice on August 11. However, things have turned out brilliantly for them.

The Rams had a great offense, with stars like league MVP Matthew Stafford and wide receivers Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. But the Cowboys' defense was on point, especially linebacker Justin Barron.

"In the end, Parker's defense owned the day," the Dallas Cowboys staff writers wrote. "Led by linebacker Justin Barron, who gave Stafford and Stetson Bennett pure hell in LA."

The dallascowboys.com writer Patrik Walker reported that Barron grabbed three interceptions against the quarterbacks. He had two against Stetson Bennett and one against Matthew Stafford.

Left Tackle Tyler Guyton had to step out for a moment after he was having a problem with his arm due to a sore elbow. But he eventually returned to the field, leaving Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer impressed.

"I'm proud of him [Guyton]," the HC said, per Dallas Cowboys writer Tommy Yarrish. "He's one of the most talented tackles I've ever been around."

While the Cowboys struggled to get throws downfield on offense, they shined in the red zone, with star Dak Prescott throwing four touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb caught two, and Kavonte Turpin and Brevyn Spann-Ford each caught one.

Cowboys WR George Pickens also had a good practice day, catching two passes from Prescott while facing cornerback Emmanuel Forbes.

While the offense showed signs of improvement, the defense conquered the day. But who was leading the defense?

Dallas Cowboys defense guided by Christian Parker showed dominance against the Rams

The Cowboys' defense during the joint practice with the Rams was on point, with defensive coordinator Christian Parker countering every pre-snap move by Super Bowl-winning Rams coach Sean McVay.

Defensive players like Shemar James, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Isaiah Land, and Quinnen Williams had sacks in practice, frustrating the Rams QBs. HC Schottenheimer also praised the Parker-led defense.

"We're a different defense," Schottenheimer said in the post-practice presser, per the dallascowboys.com. "The mentality and the mindset of the defense are different, and that's great. The Rams challenge you in a lot of different ways. They're a very, very physical team."

This is Parker's first time leading a defense. He was the defensive pass game coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 and 2025.

He helped the Eagles lead the NFL in passing defense, allowing just 182 yards per game and the second-lowest completion percentage at 59.5 percent over the two seasons.

With a successful defense day and some takeaways on the offensive end, the Cowboys continue their training camp. The camp runs through August 21 at the River Ridge Playing Fields in Oxnard.

Based on Tuesday's joint practice, do you think the Cowboys will be able to make a contention run this season? Let us know in the comments.
