Thursday's practice brought an unwelcome development for the Dallas Cowboys as rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham exited the session early without explanation. ESPN's Todd Archer later reported that the rookie was dealing with an injury.

As per the insider, the third-round pick is dealing with a groin injury. However, he also noted that it is not expected to keep him sidelined for long.

However, the injury came at the worst possible time, with the Cowboys heading deeper into training camp. NFL insider Nick Harris shared a video on X showing Barham walking to the injury tent with a coach.

In the video featured in Harris' X post, the rookie linebacker wasn't limping or showing any visible signs of discomfort. This has given fans hope that he could return sooner rather than later.

Early in training camp, Barham's performance with the first-team defense at inside linebacker has certainly impressed the team. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker praised him for bringing "a physicality and a demeanor to the inside of the defense."

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also agreed with Parker's assessment.

"It's his ability to apply the things we're coaching," Schottenheimer said, via Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "We see and know the physicality, but to see it and apply it has been great."

It would be a shame if he misses more padded practices, as he is one of the team's most promising rookies drafted in April.

Over two seasons at Maryland and another two at Michigan, he amassed 193 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, and seven pass deflections in 48 games.

His production is the reason the Cowboys drafted him, and he will be key to the team.

The Cowboys are going through a phenomenal training camp, and any significant injury could derail their plans this year.

As DC Christian Parker reshapes the defensive unit, Barham has emerged as one of the team's most intriguing defensive additions.

His early performance has already earned nods from the coaching staff, who have positioned him as a player capable of taking on a much larger role than initially expected.

"I just think he's dialed in," Schottenheimer said of Barham. "He's all about ball, man. He loves football. He loves playing football. He asks really good questions, but it's a job. It's a job for him. And I think some guys come out of college, and they learn quickly that the NFL is a job."

Per SI NFL insider Zach Dimmitt, if injuries continue to affect DeMarvion Overshown or Dee Winters fails to meet the expectations he set during his time with the San Francisco 49ers, Barham would be the Cowboys' best option.

“Of course, it's more likely that Barham will play a valuable depth role instead of being leaned on as a rookie starter, but the season is long, and things change,” wrote Dimmitt.

Expectations are sky-high for the rookie, and he will have to live up to them.
