The Dallas Cowboys are moving in a new direction on defense, with a new defensive coordinator on the team and a fresh perspective for the future.

With the team's changing approach, Vice President, Player Personnel, Will McClay, is carefully evaluating the process of Draft preparation and free agency decisions.

NFL Journalist, Jon Machota, presented  McClay's statement via X: “Not really. It just depends if that end can play a 5-technique, 6-technique or can he stand up, can he run back? Those are all the things that you have to go through when you’re talking about putting pieces in the defense."

McClay added that there’s much more involved in the process. While mock drafts are popular, people "don’t know the nuts and bolts of the scheme." Comparing it to building a car, he explained that not every part fits every engine, and building a functioning system means selecting the right pieces that fit together.

The changes to a new defensive system have shifted the way talent is evaluated on the field of the Dallas Cowboys. With the coming of a new offensive coordinator, Christian Parker acknowledged,

"So our core principles, we'll be a 3-4 by nature, but 4-3 spacing will be appropriate, 4-2-5 in nickel, different front structures, coverages behind it. But I will say being multiple is probably the most important thing about it."

The strategy is already being put into practice with the current team members. One of the good examples of it is Marist Liufau, as he changes roles using both of his skills as an edge rusher and linebacker. The training will make sure that the Cowboys' defence stays unpredictable and aggressive in the game.

How Does Parker Plan to Build This Defense?

Christian Parker has a long-term vision for the Dallas Cowboys, especially for the defense. In a press conference, while discussing the schemes, he also talked about how the team can work towards it. Parker stated, about putting players in a position to win

"How can you put players in highlighted positions, create one-on-ones for certain guys? How can you protect certain guys? If we can win on blitzing a running back, then we're going to blitz a lot. If we got good man-to-man corners, we're going to play man. If we're better than zone vision, we'll play more zone."

He is seeking a flexible defensive identity while adapting to the strengths of each player. The backbone for the whole would be fundamentals- stopping the run early, winning on first down, and tackling and situational awareness.

To sum up in his own words, "You want to build a package that has diversity in scheme, and you want to tailor it to the players you have."
