Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Parris Campbell, a Super Bowl champion, announced his retirement. He was just two months short of turning 29.

The Cowboys' official site announced the retirement news on May 27, putting Campbell’s name on the reserve/retired list.

Campbell was the second round NFL Draft pick out of Columbus and has played in the NFL since 2019. He began his career with the Indianapolis Colts and then played with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Parris Campbell Jr. (21) receives the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy after beating Northwestern Wildcats 45-24 in the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis, Ind on December 1, 2018.

He was drafted as a second-round pick (No. 59) in the 2019 NFL Draft. His rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts was marred by injuries, including a ‌PCL and MCL injury in his left knee.

His best campaign across seven seasons in the NFL was with the Colts, where he recorded 63 receptions for 623 yards and three touchdowns in 2022, marking his only full season.

Campbell previously contemplated retiring in 2024, when he was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles to join the practice squad.

“If this is the only opportunity that I have to go be on a practice squad, I'm done with ball, and we'll figure out what's next,” he said, per Nate Ulrich of Akron Beacon Journal.

But he pushed through and made it to the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2025, a 40-22 win against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I've seen it all the way through, and now we're here in the Super Bowl,” he said to the Beacon Journal

Campbell recorded 123 catches for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns in 50 games played, out of which he started 27 games across seven seasons.

He signed a reserve/future contract with the Cowboys earlier this year, after being signed to the practice squad in the 2025 season.

The wide receiver played one game with the Cowboys during the Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He apparently retired due to health and injury concerns.

"Instead of giving it another shot elsewhere, he's retiring altogether. Injuries likely played a role in the decision, as Campbell suffered an MCL sprain in Cowboys training camp last offseason," wrote Zach Dimmitt of Sports Illustrated

With his retirement, does this impact the depth chart of the Cowboys’ wide receiver room heading into the 2026 season?

Dallas Still Has Plenty of Depth at Wide Receiver

There are two roster spots available on the Cowboys' 90-man depth chart, post-Campbell's retirement, according to Patrick Walker of DallasCowboys.com.

Veteran additions Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Tyler Johnson are expected to compete for the backup rotational spots.

The Cowboys drafted Anthony Smith in the 2026 NFL Draft, adding more depth to the wide receiver room, underlining Campbell's lack of necessity in the depth chart.

With the top already stacked by George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, followed by Ryan Flournoy (WR3) and KaVontae Turpin (WR4), his contribution would have been overshadowed in the crowded WR room of the Cowboys.
