Cowboys Will Draft Dak Prescott’s Replacement Indicate Early Reports

A new ESPN mock draft suggests a replacement for the Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott, hinting at a two-time CFP National Champion of the Miami Hurricanes.

According to NFL analyst Ben Solak of ESPN, the Boys should go for Carson Beck as a developmental quarterback behind Prescott and later eventually take his spot.

"The QB2 job is up for grabs in Dallas," Solak wrote on April 8. "With three picks in the fifth round and an otherwise deep roster, why wouldn't the Cowboys take a chance on a QB should one fall into their lap?”

Solak suggests a fifth-round pick at No. 152 to select Carson Beck from the Miami Hurricanes.

Beck played a total of 55 games in his five years at Georgia and the last year with Miami. He has compiled a 49–6 record with 11,725 yards, completing 966 passes out of 1,390 attempts and 88 touchdowns.

His best campaign was in 2025 with the Hurricanes. He recorded 30 touchdowns for 3,813 yards in 16 games, with a win-loss record of 13-3.

He also had 12 interceptions, but the passing efficiency rating of 157.0 shows he was quite consistent in his growth.

“Beck is very much a rhythm/confidence thrower who lets his mistakes compound, but he can also get into a pocket and throw with NFL timing and zip. This is a trait he shares with Prescott, who looks like the league's best quarterback when he's hot in the pocket," per Solak.

Dak Prescott and Carson Beck are often compared with each other. As mentioned by analysts, they are capable of making precise high-level throws when conditions are stable.

Though Prescott has proven NFL success, Beck brings big-game experience. But he is still viewed as a work in progress, with some limitations compared to top-tier prospects.

Can Carson Beck Fill Dak Prescott’s Shoes?

Carson Beck has been criticized for his ball placement and accuracy, and also for the delay in decision-making due to pressure.

"His accuracy and his arm talent are both only average, so he needs to be an impeccable decision-maker in order to thrive. But coverage rotations and pressure both bait him into poor choices," Solak noted.

With that being said, Beck recorded 12 interceptions in two consecutive seasons - 2024 at Georgia and 2025 at Miami. Analysts have pointed out that most quarterbacks with Beck's expertise and accuracy do not typically struggle with interceptions consistently.

"It's unlikely those habits will go away in the NFL for a player with so much experience already," Solak concluded.

Scouting for Dak Prescott's replacement is not an impending issue for the Cowboys. But it's only advantageous to consider a possible lineup for a backup quarterback along with Joe Milton III and Sam Howell.
