The Dallas Cowboys opened their preseason with a 17-7 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, August 15. It was their first preseason-opening win in nine years, while rookie wide receiver Camden Brown also made his presence felt.

Brown caught three passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns, including a 2-yard fade from Joe Milton III in the back corner of the end zone. After the game, the undrafted rookie explained the mindset behind his standout performance.

"When the ball is in the air, it's mine," Brown told reporters after the game. "That's always been the mindset from Georgia Southern to Auburn. Just having that mentality because I feel like just playing football in general is having the right mentality."

The second touchdown came after Brown had already made his presence felt earlier in the game. He hauled in a 39-yard touchdown from Sam Howell in the second quarter before making the one-handed grab from Milton to give Dallas another score.

He also made it clear that earning trust is just as important as making spectacular plays.

“Being dependable on gaining trust from the coaches, from anybody for real,” Brown told the reporters on August 16 via Dallas Cowboys YouTube. “So just being dependable and just showing everybody that you can do what you’ve got to do.”

For Brown, the performance was another extension of what he has shown throughout training camp. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound receiver has consistently made plays while trying to earn a spot on Dallas' 53-man roster.

Brown had a strong showing against Seattle, but the night meant more to the rookie for another reason.

Camden Brown's preseason debut carried personal meaning

Brown spent three seasons at Auburn before transferring to Georgia Southern, where he took on a larger role in 2025. He finished that season with 65 catches for 1,079 yards and 14 touchdowns. Brown then went undrafted in April and joined Dallas looking to earn a roster spot.

After the game, Brown revealed that he wore a chain with a picture of his late sister, Kaden, who died after battling kidney failure.

"My little sister right here, she's proven everybody wrong, so that's just who I am," Brown told reporters in the same interview. "People say she wasn't gonna make it past 3. She still proved people wrong, and she lived to 17 years old."

The game came just two days after the fifth anniversary of her death, making the week especially difficult for Brown and his family.

"This past week was kind of a little rough for me because August 13th, 2021, was when she passed away," Brown said. "Just living through her every single day, and I feel like she lived through me today."

Brown now has two more preseason games to strengthen his case for a roster spot. His performance against Seattle certainly gave Dallas another reason to keep watching.
