Dak Prescott was statistically the second-best quarterback in the 2025 season. He played all the games for the Dallas Cowboys, leaving backup QB Will Grier on the bench.
Result? The Dallas Cowboys have let go of quarterback Will Grier, Dak Prescott’s backup.
The front office has signed Philadelphia Eagles' Sam Howell on a one-year deal. That means that the number 2 position will be a toss-up between Sam Howell and existing QB Joe Milton III.
In the 2025 season, Grier was part of the Cowboys’ practice squad and was given a futures deal in January, as per Todd Archer. The veteran was then let go to clear space and bring in fresh talent.
Sam Howell had been the starter for the Washington Commanders since 2023. He was drafted onto their squad in 2022, in the fifth round. In 2023, he recorded career-high numbers in 3,946 passing yards, 388 completions, 612 attempts, and 21 touchdowns.
In the next couple of seasons, he was with the Seattle Seahawks before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings in April 2025, and then traded to the Philadelphia Eagles soon after in August 2025.
Howell’s lack of game appearances in past seasons has not stopped the Cowboys from bringing him into the squad. Existing quarterback Joe Milton III and Howell will be competing for the number 2 behind Dak Prescott.
The addition of Howell has created further depth to the Cowboys' squad. While Milton was the number 2 QB in 2025, it remains to be seen who will take up that spot in the 2026 season.
The Cowboys are to make changes in their offensive line to help Dak Prescott
The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to sign OL Matt Hennessy, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. Hennessy can be a replacement for Brock Hoffman, who was not tendered as a Restricted Free Agent.
Hennessy was picked up by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2020 draft. In his second season, he started all 17 games for the Falcons, posting 1,029 offensive snaps, and was a key figure in the offensive line.
In 2023, he suffered a knee injury and was placed on the injury reserve list until the final two games of the season. He spent a few months with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 offseason before rejoining the Falcons' practice squad. He then moved to the San Francisco 49ers in late 2024, where he has been ever since.
Matt Hennessy's experience has created much-needed depth for the Cowboys on the offensive line, and his presence can prove to be useful for the Cowboys.
