The Dallas Cowboys may have just found an intriguing defensive target as the franchise continues to reshape its roster under their new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker.
On a recent episode of Locked On Cowboys, Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool discuss that the Dallas Cowboys should make a move for Josh Sweat, the Arizona Cardinals' pass rusher. Parker's arrival has led Dallas towards a more defensive identity, making Sweat an even more appealing fit.
"Josh Sweat is another one of these long, really athletic pass rushers. And honestly.. He's played in the 34. He's got no problem standing up. He's a good run defender, " said Mosher. "The Cowboys are looking for somebody that can be productive for the next two or three years."
Sweat may not have the resume of an All-Pro pass rusher, but he has been a steady contributor throughout his career. His ability to impact both the run and passing game gives him versatility, something that fits the type of well-rounded defenders.
"This is something that the Cowboys should at least look into. The Cowboys have a couple of advantages here. Number one, Christian Parker was the coach of Philadelphia when Josh Sweat was there, and they were winning Super Bowls." Mosher added.
Josh Sweat is familiar with Parker, who coached him in the Eagles. They won the Super Bowl in the 2024 season. Ryan Smith, the Cowboys' secondary coach, was also on the coaching staff in Arizona last year, when he recorded 12 sacks.
If Dallas continues prioritizing scheme fits over star power, Sweat could become a real target. Sweat reuniting with Parker and Smith can hopefully lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl 2026 season.
Dallas Cowboys' Defensive Plan Comes Into Focus
The Dallas Cowboys have made significant moves to strengthen their edge rusher room this offseason. They have added Rashan Gary and Malachi Lawrence, but it is believed the work is not yet finished.
"They still need one more guy," said Marcus Mosher on the Locked on Cowboys podcast.
If Dallas can get Sweat for the Day 2 pick in 2027, the Cowboys will have one of the deepest edge rotations in the NFC. Rashan Gary and Sweat would lead the group, while Donovan Ezeiruaku can focus on pass-rushing situations and continue his growth, per the discussions of the Locked on Cowboys podcast.
The rise of young Malachi Lawrence means he can develop quickly alongside Sweat, an experienced player, around him. This balance provides Dallas with versatile options.
