The Dallas Cowboys are all geared up for the NFL Combine, and ahead of the draft, Jerry Jones is looking to trim the current roster to make space for new talent.
The first hit is taken by Linebacker Logan Wilson, who was dropped off to save a small but valuable $6.5 million. He was initially traded in from the Cincinnati Bengals, but failed to make an impact with the Cowboys.
Wilson played seven games for the Bengals before being traded last November to the Cowboys, where he played 7 games and started one. He only recorded 224 snaps in these games, with 15 solo tackles and a forced fumble.
The new coaching staff of the Cowboys, which includes defensive coordinator Christian Parker and Inside Linebackers coach Scott Symons, seems to think that Wilson does not add value to the team. They would rather have the $6.5 million free cap space to invest in other defensive reinforcements.
Dallas' poor defensive performance last season could be a major reason behind multiple defensive exits. Trevon Diggs, Kaiir Elam, and Damone Clark were shocking mid-season releases by the Cowboys.
They ranked last in the league in passing yards allowed per game (251.5) and points allowed per game (30.1). It didn't help when they traded one of their best defenders, Micah Parsons, to the Green Bay Packers ahead of the season.
Nonetheless, the Cowboys now have $24.5 million left in cap space with this move.
Scott Symons Among a String of New Coaching Hires for the Cowboys
Jerry Jones has decided to revamp his defensive coaching system. Along with Christian Parker, he has also hired a new Inside Linebackers coach in Scott Symons.
Symons was the defensive coordinator for the SMU Mustangs and has now joined the Cowboys.
He helped the Mustangs reach the College Football Playoffs in 2024, the first time in four seasons. Symons was also a semifinalist for the Broyles Award as the college football’s top assistant.
He has now taken up the Inside Linebackers coach job under the young Christian Parker, and it looks like the coaching staff has its mind set on securing the playoff spot next season.
