Dallas Cowboys' 2026 NFL Draft Plans Face Unfortunate Twist After Donovan Ezeiruaku’s Setback

The Cowboys' defensive plans for 2026 have hit a major snag. Second-year pass rusher Donavan Ezeiruaku has undergone surgery for a significant injury. His absence could force Dallas to rethink its entire offseason strategy.

As per Todd Archer of ESPN, the pass rusher is expected to be sidelined until the start of training camp.

The New Jersey native played his college football at Boston College before being selected by the Cowboys as the 44th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The pass rusher led college football with 16.5 sacks in his final year at Boston College.

In his first season in the NFL, Ezeiruaku had two sacks and 40 tackles. Seven of those tackles led to a loss of yards, and he also had 43 quarterback pressures. But his stats aren't the only factor in Dallas having to restrategize.

The Dallas Cowboys switched defensive coordinators from Matt Eberflus to Christian Parker. Parker prefers a 3-4 formation compared to the 4-3 under Eberflus.

Under the defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, Ezeiruaku was all set to transition into a different position. From being an edge pass rusher/ defensive end to an outside linebacker.

This injury complicates the team's plans for free agency and the draft. It remains to be seen.

Who Could Replace Donavan Ezeiruaku?

This is a tricky situation for Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. This decision requires careful consideration, especially after the Cowboys' poor defensive performance last season.

Within the 53-man roster, apart from Donavan Ezeiruaku, the only other pass rusher available is James Houston. The 27-year-old defensive end had 18 solo tackles and had 5.5 sacks in the 2025 NFL season.

Apart from Houston, the other available players at the same position are Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, and Payton Turner. All three players are set to become unrestricted free agents and might not even return to the Dallas Cowboys.

The only bit of good news for the Cowboys is that Jerry Jones has promised more spending on the defense. "And so all of those things I want to do everything we possibly can to stop somebody and to basically win some third downs more than we did last year. And so I think that would be the area that you would see me bust the budget. Where you would see me do that is what we're doing defensively."
