The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a contract extension for four years with the star kicker, Brandon Aubrey. That makes him the highest-paid kicker in the league's history.

Aubrey signed a four-year, $28 million contract, in which he earns an average annual salary of $7 million and $20 million is guaranteed.

So, as one contract settled, the cap space for the Cowboys was updated before the draft. According to Spotrac, Dallas now has $16 million in cap space.

On top of that, the team is expected to spend around $9.1 million in the draft, per Spotrac.

Aubrey will carry a cap hit of $3.4 million and a dead cap value of $6.75 million. The kicker will earn a base salary of $1.5 million and an $8.25 million signing bonus, per Spotrac.

Now, Dallas ranks 21st league-wide in available cap space and last in the NFC East, per the latest rankings by Spotrac.

The Washington Commanders sit second in the league at $50 million, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles at 8th with $33 million. And the New York Giants are in 20th spot with $18 million.

The Tennessee Titans lead all 32 teams with $64M available. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins rank last with a cap space of just $1 million.

But for Aubrey to land this deal with Dallas wasn't easy.

Brandon Aubrey’s Historical Deal

The Cowboys first offered Brandon Aubrey a contract worth around $7 million per year because that was a market-high for that position then.

But as per Pro Football Talk report, Aubrey's agent pushed back to land a deal closer to $10 million annually.

As the negotiations fell through, the Cowboys responded by placing a second-round restricted tender on Aubrey worth over $5 million for 2026.

The purpose was to limit Aubrey's market and get a trade value for him. Any team interested in him would have to surrender a second-round pick as compensation.

When the April 17 deadline passed without a single offer sheet, Aubrey's return to Dallas was effectively sealed.

Aubrey holds the NFL record for recording 14 field goals over 50 yards in a single season. He has earned three consecutive Pro Bowl nods. That makes him the first kicker in league history to achieve that feat.

His $28M total contract value also surpasses the Kansas City Chiefs' Harrison Butker's previous record deal of $25.6M, way past the previous benchmark for kickers.

And with that, Dallas has its kicker locked in through the 2030 season. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
