The Dallas Cowboys are 10 days into training camp, and the pads are finally on. While Brian Schottenheimer has liked what he’s seen so far, Dallas has already been dealt a few early setbacks.
Monday’s padded practice brought a noticeable jump in intensity as the Cowboys embraced contact.
While full tackling remains off-limits for now, the head coach expects his players to finish every rep by wrapping up and delivering a thud.
“I want to see physical play,” Schottenheimer said, per the Dallas Cowboys. “I want to see pad level. I think we want to get our pads down. We want to be able to strike. There are things that you teach in terms of we’re a leverage tackling team, so the way you work and get your leverage.”
While the head coach has been fairly impressed with Tyler Guyton’s performances at left tackle, he has not officially named him the starter.
On the other hand, Nate Thomas has been challenged to raise his level of play.

Tight end Jake Ferguson continued his impressive camp by catching four passes from Dak Prescott on Thursday, including a completion during a free play after the defense jumped offside.
While CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are the star wide receivers, Ryan Flournoy has been one of the biggest standouts in training camp.
He made a physical contested touchdown catch during Monday’s practice and has continued to impress throughout camp.
The battle between cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel has intensified.
On Monday, Durant continued to impress the coaching staff by breaking up a pass before intercepting Dak Prescott in the red zone after reading the play perfectly and cutting in front of CeeDee Lamb.
While Durant has been making a case for himself, Revel Jr. is not that far away. On Monday, he had his strongest practice yet, recording at least three pass breakups while staying glued to CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
Training camp has gone smoothly so far, but there have been a few hiccups along the way.
Princeton Fant update as Dallas Cowboys injury woes grow
On Monday, Princeton Fant tore his ACL and partially tore his MCL during training.
The latest update on his condition is grim, as doctors have confirmed he will miss the entire season. He is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
“Really disappointed for him, for everything that he’s put into this,” Schottenheimer said, per Tommy Yarrish of Dallas Cowboys. “Obviously, he was very disappointed, but I told him, ‘Hey look, your story’s far from over.”
While Fant’s story is all but over after his season-ending injury, the Cowboys continue to deal with injury concerns. On Tuesday, rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham suffered a groin injury.
Although he is expected to return soon, the team has continued to battle injuries throughout training camp.
