The Tennessee Titans just signed a three-year, $105.9M contract with defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, creating a new benchmark for DTs. However, this deal could also impact the Philadelphia Eagles' next extension deal with DT Jalen Carter.
Chase Senior, host of Eagles Now by Chat Sports, believes that Carter and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, could demand a deal bigger than Simmons' for $36M annually, which would make him the highest-paid DT in the league.
“Do the Eagles want to pay two DTs $26 and $36 million per year in Carter and Jordan Davis, knowing they have to pay Cooper DeJean, Quinyon Mitchell, and Jalyx Hunt, too?” Chase Senior asked on X. “The play for the Eagles might be to pay Moro Ojomo instead and let Carter walk eventually or trade him. Tough decisions looming.”
Chase Senior raised doubts whether the Eagles would be willing to sign both DT Jordan Davis ($26M) and Carter (projected $36M).
The Eagles have already invested heavily in the secondary and defensive line with cornerback Quinyon Mitchell ($3.7M annually), CB Cooper DeJean ($2.3M annually), and linebacker Jalyx Hunt ($1.4M annually).
Simmons' three-year, $105.9M contract with the Titans comes with $100M guaranteed, earning an average annual value (AAV) of $35.3M. It surpasses the previous market set by Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones' $31.75M AAV.
The Eagles have currently exercised the fifth-year option on Carter’s contract, keeping him through 2027 with the team. Carter’s initial rookie contract was a four-year, $21.8M contract with an AAV of $5.45M.
The Philadelphia 2023 first-round pick recorded 33 tackles (21 solo), 12QB hits, five tackles for loss, and three sacks for 11 games played in 2025. He earned two consecutive Pro Bowl nods in 2024-25 and a Super Bowl title in his second year with the Eagles in 2024.
Carter’s market value is projected at $107.69M for a four-year contract, with an annual salary of $26.92M, nearly five times higher than his current average annual value, per Spotrac.
Despite uncertainty around his contract extension, one NFL analyst believes that the Eagles will extend Carter's contract based on his performance.
Bleacher Report analyst projects long-term deal for Carter
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report believes Jalen Carter's contract extension to be one of the most important deals to be made by the Eagles ahead of the 2026 season.
"The Eagles set the floor for Carter's new deal after they signed fellow defensive tackle Jordan Davis to a three-year, $78 million extension," Moton wrote in his report on June 20. "The former is a two-time Pro Bowler and more of a pass-rushing threat than the latter, which will factor in his contract negotiations."
The Eagles have already exercised the fifth-year option in Carter's rookie deal, extending his contract for the 2027 season. Moton believes that if the Eagles re-sign Carter, he may demand more than Davis' contract, citing his production.
Carter recorded 13.5 sacks in three years while Davis sits at eight sacks in four years.
The Eagles reportedly remain hesitant about such a long-term financial commitment. But Moton believes Carter's production outweighs such doubts.
