Eagles insider makes bold Jalen Hurts claim amid growing doubts

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts continues to face scrutiny. Even with past success, certain doubts are coming back ahead of the new season.

On Monday, Eagles insider Jimmy Kempski made a strong claim about Jalen Hurts, noting that he is often judged more harshly than other quarterbacks despite his role in big games and strong performances.

“Jalen Hurts is a flawed quarterback, and his scabs get picked at both locally and nationally to an excessive degree at times, at least relative to other quarterbacks around the league," Kempski wrote.

Recent criticism has centered on Hurts' consistency as a passer and whether he can take another step under the Eagles' new offensive system despite his resume and postseason success.

"And sometimes those criticisms are fair…There's ample evidence that it can happen again," according to Philadelphia Eagles insider Jimmy Kempski’s PhillyVoice column.

The talk about Hurts comes after a good season, but an early playoff exit revived the debates about his performances.

During the 2025 season, Hurts had 3,224 yards passing and 25 touchdowns as he helped the Eagles win the NFC East division. However, a wildcard loss led to concerns about his performance in the coming season.

Jalen Hurts, a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl LIX MVP, now faces higher expectations as pressure continues to build in Philadelphia.

Kempski’s comments suggest that Hurts’ performances in big moments still matter despite the recent criticism, and the upcoming season will now give him another chance to answer those doubts on the field.

Kempski isn't the only one expressing confidence in Hurts heading into the new season.

Eagles OC Sean Mannion shows confidence in Jalen Hurts

According to an ESPN report by Tim McManus, Philadelphia Eagles’ new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, in his first official press conference, spoke about Jalen Hurts and called him “awesome.”

“Jalen's been awesome," Sean Mannion said about Hurts. "I really think he can do anything we ask of him. He's accurate. He's a great athlete. He really attacks the fundamentals."

Mannion elaborated on what has made working with Hurts particularly rewarding.

"That's what's been really fun to watch these last two weeks of Phase 2… Those are the guys that are really fun to work with," Mannion added.

With outside criticism continuing, Hurts will have another opportunity in 2026 to answer those questions on the field with the backing of his coaching staff.
