Cleveland Browns defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (90) and defensive end Myles Garrett (95) celebrate after Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (9) is sacked in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 1 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025. The Bengals begin the season with a 17-16 win over the Browns.
The Philadelphia Eagles have officially moved on from veteran edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka after his prolonged absence from the team this offseason.
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, the Eagles placed Tryon-Shoyinka on the reserve-retired list after the veteran informed the organization of his decision to step away from football. The move comes just months after he signed with Philadelphia in free agency.
Tryon-Shoyinka didn’t attend the Eagles' offseason program, which sparked questions about his status.

The 27-year-old declined to provide any public details regarding his offseason absence or sudden decision to walk away from the game.
The former first-round pick entered the NFL as the 32nd overall selection in the 2021 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During four seasons in Tampa Bay, he appeared in 66 games and recorded 15 sacks, 35 quarterback hits and 138 total tackles.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Eagles' decision to place him on the reserve-retired list officially removes him from the active roster while preserving the procedural rights associated with his contract.
The development creates an unexpected vacancy in Philadelphia's pass-rushing rotation, though it appears the front office had already started preparing for that possibility.
While Tryon-Shoyinka's retirement closes a brief chapter with the Eagles, the team had already taken steps to address the potential roster gap.
Eagles Anticipated Joe Tryon-Shoyinka's Move
The Eagles were not caught scrambling after Tryon-Shoyinka's decision.
According to NJ.com, the franchise recognized that a roster opening could be developed. Just days before the official retirement, Philadelphia signed veteran edge rusher A.J. Epenesa.
Epenesa is expected to fill the role Tryon-Shoyinka was projected to occupy as a rotational pass rusher behind Philadelphia's top edge defenders.
The former Buffalo Bills defender brings more recent production to the position. Epenesa totaled 24 sacks over six seasons with Buffalo. With that kind of production, he became a crucial player for the Bills' defensive front.
Later, the Eagles also added wide receiver Erik Ezukanma and defensive back Shaun Wade from the UFL after the season.
The 26-year-old Ezukanma entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by the Dolphins in 2022. He played five games for the Dolphins between 2022 and 2024, recording 1 reception and 5 rushing attempts.
Wade joined the league as a fifth-round selection by Baltimore in 2021 out of Ohio State. He played 20 games, including six starts, for New England from 2021 to 2023 before spending time in the UFL.
