Ex-Cowboys defender facing crucial training camp battle with Giants

A fresh start in New York was supposed to reset Chauncey Golston’s career, but instead it has turned into a test of survival. The former Cowboys defender now walks into Giants training camp with more questions than security around his name.

Chauncey Golston is already on the roster bubble for the New York Giants after a disappointing first season. Signed to an $18 million deal, Golston struggled to make an impression, and his spot is under serious threat heading into training camp.

“He'll have to fight for positioning on the roster in training camp,” Michael Haney of GMenHQ wrote on July 2. “Especially with a new coaching staff, nothing is guaranteed.”

According to Michael Haney of GMEN HQ, Chauncey Golston's role within the Giants' defensive rotation ahead of training camp is highly uncertain.

Arrivals of Shelby Harris and Sam Roberts have pushed Golston down the depth chart, though Roy Robertson-Harris' injury has created an opening.

The upcoming camp now presents a key opportunity for Golston in New York, and his performances over the next few weeks could shape his role for the 2026 season.

During his 2024 season with Dallas, Golston played in 13 games and posted 5.5 sacks along with 56 total tackles, eight quarterback hits, and five tackles for loss.

However, his first season in New York didn’t go as planned, as he ranked at the bottom among the team’s qualifying defensive linemen in both total pressures and pass-rush grade.

Last season, Golston played in 10 games and started just one for the Giants, racking up 20 tackles (13 solo), five tackles for loss, and one QB hit.

The 28-year-old finished 2025 in New York with just one sack but remained part of the defensive rotation and contributed more against the run.

The expectations around Golston were quite different when he first joined New York during the offseason.

Chauncey Golston was seen as a valuable depth option

According to Sports Illustrated's Alex House, Chauncey Golston was viewed as one of the more underrated additions to the Giants during the offseason.

"Former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Chauncey Golston was a particularly intriguing option off the bench," Alex House wrote. "As he looked to be one of the sneakiest signings of the offseason."

Golston spent most of the season as part of the Giants' defensive rotation, with Brian Burns and rookie Abdul Carter drawing much of the attention on the edge.

Even so, he remained one of the experienced depth options within the unit.

The coming season gives Golston another opportunity in New York, and the next few weeks should offer a clearer picture of his role on defense.

What do you think? Will Golston make the most of his opportunity with the Giants this season? Let us know in the comments.
